Don’t know how many people got this today, but I figure I’ll post it. Anyone have a idea what this means?

    Hello,

As part of our efforts to continually improve the advertising experience for our users, advertisers, and publishers, we wanted to inform you that over the next few months we will be testing new ways to serve ads to your site. Specifically, we will be running a limited number of site-targeted campaigns that will leverage 3rd party ad-serving/tracking technology.

As part of the test, you may see an increase in revenue as a result of advertisers selecting your site for site-targeted campaigns.

To track the performance of a campaign, 3rd parties ad-servers may place a cookie on users’ computers to capture standard web traffic information such as time, date, IP address and browser information. Rest assured that the 3rd party ad-servers will not rent, sell, or release user information. All data collected by these 3rd-parties is analyzed in aggregate to track advertising campaign performance and is not tied to specific users. Google will not have access to the information that is collected.

And, as always, these ads will still go through our approvals process to ensure their quality, so you don’t need to worry about annoying or user-intrusive ads on your site.

Please let me know if you have specific questions or concerns, or prefer to not participate.

    Thanks,

    The Google AdSense Team

It looks like Adwords is giving more defined control to advetisers. Right now they can bid on keywords and they will run on any site except for those that are filtered. They can also bid on a cost per impression basis and select what sites they want impressions on. This sounds like they will be able to bid on keywords by site.

I trust it will be an improvement for Google, advertisers and the good Adsense publishers.

John, I think you got the email because your TTZ is strongly represented in the niche where site-targetted campaigns are quite common, and probably your site has attracted many direct advertisers before.

Sounds like a selected few, maybe those with 10,000 uniques per day :)

Anyway, this is probably related to the OnSite thingy, if you enable it. Honestly, I don't really mind as long as I get paid handsomely. Cookies or no cookies :)

I received this letter, but am by no means in any of the range that some of you users are.

I do merely 5000 unique a day across 7 different sites.

Well, I guess this step is designed to bring advertizers back to AdWords. Cookies will ensure that advertizers spend money more wisely and therefore get better traffic to their websites. Obviously, this will reshape a current situation among non-quality (i.e cheap) and quality (thoughtful) AdSense websites bringing one people down and raising others on top. Be prepared to act!

If it brings the advertisers more targetted visits, then they will be likely to invest more in adwords.

Likewise it is a reward to have a quality site if these ads are going to be paying more then. Well it would be win win.

Lets hope thats how it pans out anyhow.

But, if this will happend then I think, this will be a bad news for small publisher like me.

I am seeing a few direct targeted ads across my sites now. And it is having a nice effect on the Google eCPM! :)

After reading through this thread, I checked one of my sites.
Seems like the ads are not based on the words in the content.
But the ads are more directed, like dating for older men, even though nowhere on that page does it say "older me" "dating", etc.
Just an article about how to stay young as you age.

Will check later on google to see what the ctr, income and all is for this channel.

I asked Google for more information about this new beta, and the third party tracking ads are all site targeted ads (the advertiser selects the site/page) rather than triggered contextually through content on the page.
