I would presume Joomla, but have not used wordpress - does it even have an ecommerce facility? If you are looking at Joomla, I think Virtuemart is one of the more popular components for shops. Hope that helps.

Neither, I would use something more tailed for a Ecommerce site. ZenCart, OpenCart, OSCommerce, Prestashop, etc..

Joomla is undergoing change, a new version branch of the system was released over a year ago.

Third party developers are bringing out their components at a good, steady rate.

VirtueMart 2, the major ecommerce suite for Joomla is starting to look a great option, we're building our first store now with the new version.

If you're going to use Joomla do your homework on what is available and what is coming. If your site has more than just a store, forums, blogs, etc Joomla for my mind is the best option, however if your store will have over 10,000 products Joomla and any of its ecommerce suites are not capable of handling that level of products.

Totally agree with Harvey, Joomla and Virtuemart . Joomla is easy for you to use. Wordpress will be great for blogging but to build an e-commerce site, it's really difficult.

I tried both of them, if you compare joomla and wordpress: i prefer joomla, it has virtuemart and great modules to built your site. Wordpress just easier to build, if you don't have enough time though.
But compare to two of them, there are many ecommerce cms which is way better than them.

There is no definite answer. But in order to be able to answer, you would need to supply the following information:

    1) What are you mainly going to sell
    2) How many products are you going to sell
    3) Is your web experience rather high or low
    4) Do you need multi currency support
    5) Do you need multi language support

Magento can easily do them all, but has quite steep learning curve, also in the wrong hands Magento can get extremely slow.
PrestaShop is fast and easy, but inside is French. Some of the modules are bit harder to make for the system because of that. Otherwise it also supports everything above.

Joomla + VirtueMart I do not recommend for the moment, since they are quite buggy. Maybe in a few months time it will improve. From the current view I see that PrestaShop has taken away quite a lot of popularity from Joomla VirtueMart

Wordpress + e-Commerce (getshopped.org) - is easy to set up. Main difference between Magento/PrestaShop/VirtueMart is that you can put your products literally anywhere on your site (post, page, widget, etc...) thru use of shortcodes. Downside is the lack of multi currency support and extra plugins are required in order to get the multi currency support working properly.

And again... before asking which e-commerce software is the best.... please supply what you want to do with your potential future webshop.

I would have to recommend Joomla. Not simply because that's the CMS that I specialize in, but you have the options of using Redshop, Virtumart, Hikashop or even the new Yootheme shopping cart that will be coming out the beginning of June this year.

It's depend on what kind of website you want to build. If it is website that hold a lot of content and have several widget and column you can choose Joomla!, but if you need the simple one that also can be customized you should choose WordPress. For better SEO I advice you to choose WordPress.
