Is it necessary to rewrite URLs if our site is well indexed now?

Our NEWS PR7 and 7-year-old site has more than 2.5m URLs indexed in Google search.

This asp.net-programmed site is currently well indexed by Google though its onsite SEO is not good enough. I'm planning to optimize it but wondering whether it's necessary to rewrite current URLs to better ones.

    Current structure: domain.net/World-sports/2010/11/3BA22A48/

    Expected: domain.net/World-sports/2010/11/title-of-article-here

I myself plan to leave it as it is.

    Any ideas proz?

I think there is no need to rewrite URL just to include name of the articles or news. There are more chances to loose something that to gain.

There are some another option for this such as meta description, title, keywords etc. you could improve them in place of rewriting URLs.

it is better not to rewrite the urls.I think if your site goes well, there is no necessary to change anything.just keep the original condition.

I advices you to don't change urls you entire ranking will dropped. If you want do that make new page and ridirect old page with 301 redirection and don't delete any existing page.

Don't do that. Never rewrite your URL. You will a lot of things. Indexed URL, and your PR (backlinks)

If i were you it was impossible if i redirected the URLs. When your pages are indexing well, Its not needed that you redirect them at all. Don't redirect them.

Another trouble when rewriting URLs: when the editors change their original article headlines and the rewrited URLs will be changed accordingly.

Technically speaking do we have solutions for the trouble above? Just like Wordpress permalink, when users access the original URL will be 301 redirected to new one.

I'd suggest you not to change old url. Google always give importance old urls. If you change you might loose pr and ranking. Do change your url on your own risk. That happened with my blog. I had pr and good ranking with my blog. But for reason I gotta cahnge it. The next day I found all my pr and ranking is gone. Since then I am struggling for long.
