Simply because it will allow them to compete with the Yahoo directory. A model like Yahoo's pay-for-placement would be a boon for Google. Kinda wondering why they haven't done that actually...
Canadainbacon: "...not sure when it happened, but i see new listings." I am not seeing any reports anywhere else. What changes are you seeing and where. I checked where I keep an eye on and there have been no changes.
If Google opened their own dirctory they would make bank. Thnk about it...... every webmaster would want to be in it and they could charge a yearly fee. Look at how much SBD makes per year.
I have been seeing these rumours on the boards for about a year and still nothing has happened. They've even started using the site descriptions from DMOZ recently. It doesn't look like they're planning to part ways with DMOZ yet.
I think I have seen these rumours for as long as I have been an editor. That was why I was curious as to the source, in case it was somehow different from the usual ones. Thanks.

My site was added into a whole new DMOZ subcategory in May, and it isn't listed in the Google Directory either.
