Weight Formula Changed

Discussion in 'Co-op Advertising Network' started by digitalpoint, Apr 27, 2005.

Just so everyone doesn't start freaking out with a million "what happened to my weight" threads, just a heads up that the weighting formula has been changed.

    This means a couple things:

    • Everyone's weight is a LOT lower (weight is relative to everyone else, so it won't affect what counts... ad impressions). The total weight of the system was reduced by more than 6x, so the sky is not falling or any other doomsday scenarios.

    • Weight caps have been removed, so there is no upper limit on the amount of weight a single account can have from a single site. I've been tinkering with the formula for a few weeks, and I think it's pretty good right now. It's a logarithmic (not linear) scale, so enormous sites (there are some with 1M+ pages of content in the network) aren't going to take an absurd percentage of total impressions.

Oh yeah... another thing getting rid of the cap does is gives people an incentive to actually run ads site-wide, rather than in a single folder with enough pages to hit the cap.

It's going to be different for everyone since there is no longer a cap. Log into your account and look. :)

I'm too scared to do that...

It will sure be strange to see the weight going down after so many months seeing it at a stable rate.

    Shawn,

I did run into one problem. When recalculating the weight my base weight dropped to 0. I logged into the kewyord ranking to check the pages in URL and it still shows a steady 1,800. Any other reason for it to show up 0?

    Ha, good one Shawn!

I saw my weight had gone down and was furiously trying to figure out why!

    Glad I came by here!

Your gonna give someone a nervous breakdown playing with the weight this way :)

All kidding aside, thank you for this great service. I know you put a lot of thought and sweat into it.

    Chris

I would have freaked out (before reading the thread) if I hadn't noticed all the accounts I manage falling dramatically. Whew!

One fell by a factor of 15x, another by a factor of 4x...which would make sense given the 4x's relative size.

Cool deal...hopefully the ad impressions don't fall for me. ;)

Maybe an email blast should go out or make this a sticky for a period of time?
