    hi everyone,

just heard a myth and wondered if it is good.

    here it is.

if you put a link on your website linking to google, yahoo or msn ect like:

    Google
    Yahoo
    Msn

do they like this and give you better rankings for it for promoting their searchengine and linking.

    thanks

I highly doubt the search engines would work something like this into their ranking algorithm. I have heard that there may be benefits to linking to authority websites within your niche, but again that may be a myth.

If this worked to achieve higher rankings, wouldn't we all have links to Google's web site? I definitely think it's a silly myth.

Vansterdam, I believe if you rank to an authority site within your niche, and they also link to you, then you could benefit from that. I would imagine it doesn't make much difference who you link to; what's important is who is linking back to you. That's just how I understand it.

Yeah I personally don't make a point of just giving competitors free links. It doesn't make sense to me, but it is another myth that is closely related to Dr Googler's question.

I agree with you. I have had clients in the past that ask me to add links to web sites where their competition is listed in a 'links' or 'directory' section; and the client's site isn't even listed yet. They typically would ask this because their competition linked to it. I have never understood it. I believe people think it makes their site look more valid or informational, but it could send business to a competitor's site in a second's time. I always advised against it; even if my client was also listed there.

It is a myth. Any out bound link will hurt the Page Rank of your site.

They'd like it (free editorial "link of love" to their site - who wouldn't want that?), but they wouldn't reward you for it.

Linking to search engines may facilitate the crawling but it is highly debatable that you would get a better ranking in return...

There's no debate whatsover. It won't help improve your ranking.

    It's a myth.

But linking to authority site to improve your ranking is not a myth. This can help if majority of the outbound links on your site are going to authority sites as opposed to your own network, other low quality sites and affiliate programs.

Surely a myth. Does not make sense at all.

as every out bound links are counted why would any one waste their link space giving to search engine which will never give feedback to them. instead of that i would get some valid and quality related link to my site.

I think it is a myth but if the search engine includes your site to their directory list then there is a big chance that you could generate traffic then your page rank would improve. I don't think search engines would need that kind of links since they are already well-established and have more exposure

Definitely a myth. If they would give you a link in exchange though, that's a different story ;)

Isn't that a myth from about 8 or 9 years ago! Wow, I haven't heard that since back then.

I can see it now. "Hi, I'm the owner of AskYahoogolive, a search engine that pulls results from Ask.com, MSN/Live, Google and Yahoo and serves them to users. I've placed a link to your search engine site on my own. Would you be interested in linking back to mine?"

And they do it. In their news section. Stating that the site owner has been sued for copyright (they used elements of the major engines' logos in their site's logo) and trademark infringement. By all of the major engines. :D
