PC takes a long time to start

My desktop takes a long time to start.

It takes as long as 5 minutes to start completely.

Once it starts, there are no issues and it is pretty fast and error free.

I already have disabled all programs in "Startup".

Chkdsk is extremely slow too. It took be 6+ hours to complete it yesterday. (doesn't even take 6 minutes usually).

I checked with avg/avast...there are no viruses or anything.

the pc is 3 yrs old.

I have a feeling my harddisk's life is almost over.

could it be the possible reason why the pc takes such a long time to start?

It could just be Windows. I reinstall XP about every 6 months.
You might want to fire up msconfig (Windows key + R, then type 'msconfig') and check what's really starting up on boot.

already done that...have disabled everything in "startup".

I suspect there is an issue with the hard disk as chkdsk took so long.

(will trying reinstalling XP this weekend).

try to clean up the registry with a registry cleaner.

i would prefer uninstalling windows as the last step.
there are other simple tweaks that can solve the problem....

    Download CCleaner. http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloading
It's free. It will clean up everything on your computer for the most part (Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, Registry Errors, etc..). Everyone who I tell about this program their computer runs & starts up much faster. My computer is 3+ years old as well, and it starts up in 30 seconds or so.

If your pc is 3 years old that's half your problem, I would start with upgrading your ram if you want to minimise expense, this made a huge difference to my pc which is probably about the same age, or older surprisingly my maching runs NFS Undercover which needs a 3ghz cpu to run, according to the box, yet im still able to run it without much fuss on my 1.6ghz AMD machine lol infact it runs most thing ok, if a little slowly at times, more so for games.

Here's a few things you could try doing.

    1) run a full format, rather than a quick one if you haven't allready done so

    2) upgrade your ram

    3) buy a new hard drive and install windows, you can get a decent HDD for next to nothing these days I reccomend maxtor, i've had my 350GB maxtor HDD ever since I got my PC (which is a good few years old now)and theres not been a single problem with it. Very reliable. If it's still slow after doing that and the above then your probably better of getting a new pc because for the price of a complete upgrade you'd be as well getting one.

    A worthy 1000th post me finkies :D

Also don't forget to defrag you hard drive regularly. Personally I don't like the utility that goes with Windows. You'd better download another software to your PC and defrag you hard drive. Defragmentation increases computer speed.

Good tip allthough if it's running slowly after a fresh install of windows then a defrag may not be much use in this case :)

First of all try to repair registry files with the help of PC tools registry mechanic or CCleaner, if the problem persists reinstall Operating system.

If you getting the same problem then i would recommend to zero fill format your hard drive. (It will remove any starting point of bad sectors) Then again install O.S. I hope it will definitely work.

Finally, still you got the same problem then it will be best to upgrade your system.

    Well its working fine now...:).

    I did the following:

I had already disabled all items in "Startup".

I also disabled all non-Microsoft services in "System Configuration Utility".

I performed "chkdsk" and also defragmented the drive.

Next, I deleted 2 Window's user accounts (I had 3, but now have only 1).

Finally, I installed CCleaner and used it. This is one great tool and after each time I use it, the PC becomes a bit faster.

I am not sure which of the above made the greatest difference, but now my PC is as fast as when it was new.

I guess there was nothing wrong with the hard disk, RAM or windows.
