Guys like NABs, who're doing 25k+ / month aren't reading books. They're following forums, testing, trying etc.

I've had clickbank on my site and have made nothing even though I received a decent amount of traffic.

I just changed my site to something new but left the clickbank stuff because of the traffic it brings from search engines. Hopefully the visitors will purchase the new product. Not that I wouldn't be happy if they bought the clickbank stuff but the new product is much more profitable as it is long term income from each sale.

The effort part is the best part about it, $5,000 a month without having to spend a penny extra: all organic traffic and I have a couple of dedicated servers for the business anyway.

So it's 100% profit.

BTW no one answered my query regarding similar programs to Clickbank? Clickbank is great with up to 75% revenue share, but finding a good product is harder than finding a needle in a haystack.

I've signed up for a few other affiliate programs CJ and Shareasale for example and found some affiliates sharing up to 40%, but they are rare. Was hoping to find another Clickbank with a pretty much standard 50%+ revenue share so I can find more individual products with at least a 50% revenue share to promote?

I've messed around with datafeeds from Shareasale to create large sites, but know from my Amazon stores experience a few years ago Google will penalise them as thin affiliate sites (prior to the penalties was getting about 30,000 visitors a day to Amazon stores) so a waste of time, otherwise could create an affiliate store with thousands of products in about an hour (3 hours if SEO'd).

Example of a shareasale datafeed site http://www.classic-literature.co.uk/magazines/ (600+ pages indexed) 3-4 years ago that would be generating a thousand visitors a day (minimum), today it's lucky to break 100 visitors. Went live August 10th is averaging 50 visitors a day and has made $40 from AdSense and nothing from magazine sales! Got a comics one (700+ pages indexed) that's even worse, 30 visitors a day, made a total $5 from AdSense and made a few dollars in sales.

Both stores include good on page SEO, the images are hosted on my server and the affiliate links are in the format classic-literature.co.uk/magazines/buy-magazine.php?id=457787205 (and nofollowed). As a test even tried adding French and German translations of the product descriptions (that took a few hours to do as well), but no joy, still penalised.

That was a waste of half a day! in the same time could have reviewed a couple of Clickbank products and made more from a few sales.

Come to the conclusion to do well in affiliate marketing as someone who relies solely on organic traffic you have to create single product review type product pages, not use the affiliates 'thin' content. Takes more time, but you make more money long term.

You hit the nail right on the head. For some time now Google has been cracking down on thin affiliate sites. Google's main focus is user experience. They love pages that promote a good user experience.

This generally means a well designed site with a good amount of original content. These take more time to put together, but you will be much better off in the long run.

Why waste 2 hours putting together a crap site that may only generate a sale or two before Google slaps it when by only spending a few hours more you can build a site that Google will have listed years? Over the course of a year a site making a measly 2 sales a week will net you $2k - $5k. Not a bad deal. Spend 10 hours on a project that will make you $5k per year. That's $500/hour not counting any income after the first year.

What if you could build one of these a month? That's only 2.5 hours per week. After a year you would have 12 sites pumping out enough nearly enough cash to live off of. If I told you that you could retire after working 120 hours (that's three full work weeks worth of time) why wouldn't you?

(Obviously this example is oversimplified. The point is if you build quality sites that will last, you are MUCH better off in the long run)

EDIT: BTW, +rep for you SEO. It's nice to see someone one DP for once that isn't putting up a fake success story just so they can hawk their $7 eBook.

Looks like my recipe site http://www.free-recipes.co.uk/ might have had it's Google penalty lifted.

Three months to the day ago traffic dropped from over 10K to under 2K visitors a day and along with it AdSense revenue (think I lost $30-$40 a day). I recovered the loss in revenue through improving other sites and clickbank sales though, but at the time I was looking forward to again breaking the $100 a day from AdSense (last month is was $40 odd) in the coming months, so from an AdSense perspective was a big loss.

Today traffic has improved, last week was at around 1,200 visitors a day, today it's closing on 6,000 and still time for more.

So looks like the penalty has been lifted and that should make a nice difference to my AdSense earnings this month.

Thanks for the explanation off the 3 month penalty method of Google. I have the same experience but never realised it was a precise 3 month setback. I don't ask for a re-inclusion request tough

I definitely believe SEO-expert. Kind of shocked he was accused though (because I've seen people claiming A LOT MORE! Which I was skeptical about).

And if he actually owns all 4 sites in his link, then there is no question he should be making a lot of money. It would be a crime if he isn't.

That's not the real problem of course. The real problem is, how FEW websites can get over an alexa ranking of ~100,000 (~100,000 is the answer of course), and it always gets harder of course, but then again since more people are using internet than before, even if there is more websites, eventually even 300,000 will be worth a lot. I think it is already!

What I mean of course currently, is getting over 200-500 uniques per day, is the hardest thing ever, a battle up-hill because few people I know can get passed that mark who been doing web development for years. It's definitely difficult, and it cannot rely on social networks alone, it requires, patience, age of site, returning visitors who really like reading your quality content. There comes a point where you REALLY NEED original and UNIQUE content rather than just quality content because it may be repeated often.

I was wondering if, a website, as time goes on, and weekly/daily postings, about just about anything somewhat helpful (as in, it may not be original or unique at all), can get to the 10,000s of unique visitors level... Is this possible at all with time?

Yes I own the sites in my sig, I have some very nice sites: the ones in the sig aren't my best sites, they are the sites most relevant to my posts at DP. I know I've barely scratched the surface of the revenue they could be earning: for example I knew how to add 100,000 new recipes to my recipe site for over 2 years (was at 11K recipes for years) but only got around to it earlier this year despite knowing it would likely result in a 3+ fold increase in traffic. 3+ increase in traffic without having to do any off page SEO is easy traffic, there's loads of stuff like this I should do but haven't (time).

With regards your last question I'd say no it's not the best way of generating traffic to a site.

If you post about anything your going to have posts with no real focus, this type of page will generate little if any traffic. Say you've got a blog and taken a month off from posting and you make a post called "I've been so lazy with my blog lately" and explain you've been busy with work or you just haven't felt like posting, blah, blah, blah.

That sort of post is useless from a traffic generation perspective because it has no keyword focus.

So posting to say a blog for the sake of posting is not going to generate a lot of traffic. Worse still those types of pages waste your SEO resources, linking is still important to SEO and wasting links/PR on pages like the one described above should be avoided. I have some sites like this, bought them at auction (expired domains) added some content like the above example until I found the time to add decent keyword focused content (which can take me years).

Some of the sites have PR4 home pages with about 20 terrible content pages and they are lucky to pull in 30 visitors a day! Nothing wrong with the sites, the problem is the content doesn't cover real SERPs in comparison a well thought out 20 page site could easily be pulling in 10x, 20x plus traffic. So when you plan to rely on organic search engine traffic ideally every single page should target a real SERPs set otherwise your throwing resources away!

The page about the Google penalty I posted in my last post is generally targeted at the Google Penalty SERPs, it should pull in some relevant traffic, it's not a heavy traffic topic, but searches do want to find that sort of information. So the best way in my experience to generate search engine traffic is only create content if the content will generate traffic from search engines. A little keyword research is the route to determine if a page is worthwhile.

I'd avoid copying others content, basically if the content is copyright someone else don't use it on your site (at least not verbatim) since there's a very good chance it will be filtered by Google (and that's again a waste of SEO resources).

There is content that's not copyright that can be used to generate traffic, public domain content for example. I've a lot of experience using public domain content and since no one owns the copyright I've found Google will rank a site using this content based on standard SEO factors, so where copying an affiliates content (thin affiliate site) will result in your content being filtered, (normally only the owner of the affiliate content ranks number 1) with public domain content all the sites using it compete as though they all have original content: so who ever has the best SEO/backlinks gets the SERPs.

From an AdSense perspective though, public domain content sucks, below 10 cents a click generally, so your not going to make yourself rich adding a few pages of public domain content

When I made my classic literature sites I made the mistake of converting the books into a paged format, some books resulted in 500 pages online. Didn't take long to add tens of thousands of pages and when Google used to index everything (doesn't anymore) I had sites with over 200,000 pages indexed in Google. However 99% of these pages had no real focus, after you've made the index page for a book you've pretty much covered 99% of potential SERPs on that one page, so hundreds of the pages were a waste of resources and were lucky to pull in one visitor a month each! In comparison if I had a 200,000 page site with all pages targeting a different SERP set that could potentially pull in a million visitors a day (just 5 visitors a page) using exactly the same resources as my main (got several) literature site which pull in about 6,000 visitors a day (lucky to make $10 a day from AdSense from that traffic, it sucks as AdSense traffic)!

As always the best content is hand written unique content whilst taking SEO copyrighting into account.

5-6k is good start, now multiply this. In fact, in the course of 6 years you should have built well good portfolio for building links.
