Hi all, Confused adsense newbie here

At the beginning of the year I put adsense on an old forgotten site of mine that I don't often update much. After a few months I was surprised to find it generate around $20 a day... and then during the summer, over a period of 4 and a half months, very surprised to find $60 to $80 a day sometimes even a $100. Recently thought I'd try to figure out what was going on and found that it was 1 page that was generating almost all of that revenue, and that page was broken with a mysql error! Nothing there much except, of course, for the ads. I had a 40% CTR. I realised that at some point google will reindex and thought maybe I could just tweak the page just a little bit with some content and somehow maintain the page ranking and CTR -- Big mistake, google dropped it as soon as I'd touched it, I should have left well alone. Anyway...

The site now generates around $20 a day - I miss the big money.

This got me thinking, $1 a day should be easy enough to generate. If I had ten sites generating that much, that's $300 a month, then I could build up more and more sites, right?

Plan started. Added 1 extra site, then another.. both 3% CTR... and a dollar each. Yet now a trusty old page on the old site that used to generate a couple of dollars a day is generating next to nothing, but it still has same number of hits and same CTR but next to no earnings.

So whats going on? Is it that google just somehow dictates how much you get and spreads the earnings throughout the entire adsense account regardless of individual sites and traffic. Is this right? Are my dreams of a hundred sites each generating $1 hopeless?

Any pointers appreciated, sorry for longish post.

    David

When we're talking about one site, usually more page views means lower CPC (eCPM could stay high, however). But there's no such thing as relation between different sites and their earnings across the hole adsense account.

Keep working on your sites and you'll notice a constant raising of your income.

I'm sure one site is influencing another on teh same adsense account.

I haven't changed my original site (since the massive drop anyway), all I've done is add two new sites. Original site's impressions and CTR are exactly the same so why should it's revenue fall the very day I start earning revenue from a new site on the same account?

The way those figures operate are at times confusing.

Thanks, I think. I plucked that figure out of thin air - an over ambitious goal if you like, to make a point. Like I said, I have 3 sites; an established earner, and two new sites. And I'm reluctant to bother doing anything else with it if google are capping earnings / revenue smoothing / smart pricing, call it what you will... has no-one else experienced this?

Have you filtered out any sites? If you did that when you started your new sites, you might be filtering an advertiser that actually gave you earnings on your old site.

    Just a longshot...

You may be somehow affected by google's smart pricing. This has something to do with your different sites affecting each other. Also overall CTR on all sites within the same adsense account can be one of the factors that results in some kind of google's penalty...If overall CTR rate is too low or not all of your different sites within the same adsense account are not completely in accordance with adsense guidelines google may impose some kind of penalty.

Maybe this could be the problem. Last weekend one of my sites was featured on a big brazilian site. I got 60k visitors in an afternoon (the site usually gets more like 1000 a day!) this would have killed the CTR for that site... but to me it seems wrong that google then use this CTR to determine the worth of ads on a separate site that happens to be on the same adsense account.

Anyway, been trying to boost my overall CTR by removing all high impression / poor CTR ads throughout all sites on my account. Result, yesterday I had my worst day ever! Maybe I just need to sit and wait it out.
