There are many reasons linux are not as popular as windows, even if linux are free. There must be several major reasons . Let us find out the reasons .

For me, I think the major reasons are as following .
1, GUI are not availabe by default .
    2, Multimedia support
3, command line are complex and not replacement for the command line in some cases.
4, uncompatiable between difference versions .

what do you think . Feel free to leave your comments.

In my opinion the only reason Linux isn't the most popular OS is because Microsoft is a monopoly.

Linux is more reliable, easier to use, much more customizable, free, robust, secure and compared to Linux Windows is a joke.

It used to be true that Windows was easier to use, since older versions of Linux were command line only, but that's no longer true and so there are absolutely no benefit to Linux over Windows other than the monopoly factor (most games are designed for Windows).

I agree that a lot of people probably perceive Linux as being more difficult to use - and it doesn't have the same amount of technical support as Windows because there are so many more Windows users. And, in addition to most games being designed for Windows - a lot of business software is only designed with Windows/Mac users in mind?

    1. You are wront. GUI is available by default in almost all available "known" distros, you probably donno anything about linux if you say there are no GUIs. They all come with kda/gnome. They have better gui than windows..

    Look at Ubuntu dude...
    Watch this video

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5OzNQ

Ubunto beats every single OS out there today. It is free, it is secure,

GFX is the sickest you can get, if you got good GFX you can take it to advance level with some of the sickest stuff..Their inbult confiz is insane, I am still playing around with it.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5OzNQ
    watch that video..

    2. Multimedia support? LOL what you mean? All distros play any sort of video out there dude. May be gaming this is where the issue comes.

    3. CLI - LoL casual user don't have to play with the shell at all, there is no freaking need for it. All linux distros come with good amount of applications that a user can use without even bothering with shell. The only need for SHELL is unless you wanna have more flexibility and do some other stuff.

The only issue I see why Linux is not that popular among masses, is that first of all --

    1. Old people that are casual pc users, they usually get windows xp/vista installed on their desktop/laptop already they dont even know about it.

    2. Young people who know about it, mostly use Windows for gaming purposes.

    3. People are lazy and think installing Linux is difficult whereas truth be told, FREAKING LINUX installation is the easiest thing to do, I find it easier than windows XP installation.

    4. People think LINUX is all command line, they have no good knowledge of it, they never try to challenge their assumptions and do some research before making assumptions.

    5. People do not value "free source product" even though they are worth a lot more than high pricey stuff in this case Ubuntu > Vista.

    6. People do not know how to use Linux and Windows at same time running parallel operating systems.

    7. One of the things that has been hurting linux world recently, is the fact that most new laptops drivers are not supported because they only support Vista and not even XP.. Which is horrible..

    my 2 cents

To answer your question. Linux never ever crashes almost never unless you do something stupid.

It requires no customer support because Linux works almost in all states even if some important files are missing.

I think just installing some software in different distros are harder and pain in butt..

The reasons you gave here just like you're leaving in 90s. We're in 21th century now, and all of that have change in a past couple of years.

For me, the reasons why Linux not as popular as Windows because:

    1. People think Linux is only for geeks. They think they have to go a steep learning process if they want to use Linux.

    2. They have set in their mind when it comes to OS, only Windows they can think. If I said that I'm using LinuxMint or Ubuntu, most of them will instantly go "Huh!!!!!"

    3. No major PC games titles for Linux. Every games titles is released for Windows or even Mac OS, but this is rare for Linux platform.

    4. Follow what parent use. Most of the youngsters seen their mom and dad using Windows to do their daily activity and gets the job done. So, why in the hell they're going to use Linux.

    The main reasons could be:

    * Linux is not as freely available as Windows
    * It is not that user-friendly
    * Support for Linux is not as good as that for Windows (a lot of people are aware of Windows' problems as there are various resources on the net)
    * Most of the applications don't work on Linux

I think Linux still holds a very respectable market share in the web hosting OS market. LAMP is a much better and cheaper solution than Windows 2003.

Also if you are use to using Linux, you are unlikely to change to Vista

Linux has no money for marketing off the Internet. If people get over their fear of change and jump ship, it's going to be to Macs because they have the resources to get in peoples faces.

There are many versions of linux .
I also heard of that Ubunto is one of most excellent linux version.
I have plan to install Ubunto on my PC .
However I have much precision data in my PC. I don't want to shift from windows to Ubunto in a night .
Are there any solution I can have both windows and Ubunto in a PC without trouble ?

Theres no special reason why Microsoft is more popular than Linux, it's a simple matter of when you buy a new computer from a store it comes installed with Windows. When people learn how to use a comp it's with Windows. When kids go to school or Uni students learn computer science the defualt OS is Windows then they learn linux if they need to.

There is no special technical reason. Microsoft made it possible for ther average user to have home computers that were user friendly. People who feel the need to bag on microsoft need to get opver themselves because the simple reality is this.....The ability to be able to make Linux, Ubuntu and a few other PC driven OS came from progamming langauge which was learnt on a microsoft platform. I for one am glad Bill Gates did what he did, and the those that hate him for having a monopoly and making billions would be more than happy to step into his shoes and be able to corner a piece of the marketing world.

The thread is started wrong.Linux indeed is the most popular rather than Windows.

I see Linux everywhere, in my router, in my phone, in my mp3-player...on my laptop, on memory stick, switch ...and the list can continue :)

Just wait 4-5 years, Linux will have a sweet future.

Indeed Linux is more popular in regards of functionality of servers and those of us who know how to use it as a platform but at no time will it ever exceed the use of Microsoft for the average user.

After all if you compared the two, right now who is using a non microsoft os in order to use DP's forums?

Both have their places, as I formentioned, there is no reason why one is more popular than the other, it comes down to convenience and right now microsoft has the market cornered.

I think that most of people got habit working with Windows and don't want to waste time adapting to another OS.
