Does adding sitemap mean more pages will be indexed?

Adding sitemap will speed up indexing but does adding lead to more pages being indexed compared to not adding sitemap ? :)

    Might be
in case google has some problem accessing certain pages in your website , sitemap will help it find them and get them indexed.

I have found that it has helped pages get listed a lot faster than they used to get listed. Don't forget google isn't the only search engine that uses sitemaps. You can submit a sitemap to yahoo, ask, and live too. I used to have almost nothing indexed with live, and now several of my sites get some good traffic from it.

sitemap seems not very helpful for indexing :(
I dont know why but for me when i look on "Indexed pages in your site" i see some pages that i have in the sitemap
but in overview says "No pages from your Sitemaps are currently in Google's index". can someone tell why?

I find that number in the webmaster tools to be very unreliable. I always search using site:[Your URL] to find some stats. You can also do it query against multiple google data centers to compare results and find early trends.

What if some pages on your website are temporary?
Should you have your site map include those pages?
( I run auctions that last up to 30 days on my website, is it worth is to include those pages, even if its for a month?)

    FOR ME:
sitemap is exactly a map in real life, the spider or bot is like a traveler who is traveling from one place to one place ( in our case is websites/blogs).

While traveling, the spider or bot is "capturing picture", "video cam", jot something in th scratch book and etc (in our case = store information).

After a certain period, the spider/bot is going back home (server). And start to store the info taken.

Meanwhile, his friends who know he had going back from home is visiting him. With proud, he show the information he had gathered before. Of course the one with quality. (bot/spider will index quality content only)

PS: the bot/spider's friends is an anology of visitors from SE
PPS: hope you enjoy with my fairy tales :p

I would recommend submitting sitemap to google. Definitely helps I have 200 page site and only they were indexed in 1 day after I submitted sitemap.

I'm not sure what is that. but yesterday I make a new post, and about 10 minutes letter I check my WP stat. To my shock, there are two search from google that directed to my new post. Is that the power of sitemap? But it is too short to get index.

For large sites, sitemaps can work like magic.

I added a sitemap to one of my forums and my indexed pages count went up by 50% within 8 weeks.

Earlier, the forum had been stuck for about 2 years and Google wasn't really indexing additional pages. Whenever Google would index new pages, it would drop older ones.
