register the domain with a well known registrar
you could always start your own registrar for like $100k or something :)

Thats great..how do i make my own registrar?
(just for the case my domain gets popularity)

I really think my current registrar is ready to get all opportunities of making money at the cost of its clients because once i dropped a domain i didnt need a long time ago and they still keep it to put ads <.<

Aside from what freerollers said, another option is to "lease" a registrar. It can
cost about $2000+ from what I've gathered, although it's not really affordable
for the average user unless they're able to justify its costs on their own.

Beyond that, just be with a reputable registrar, and ensure it's always paid for
and in good standing. While I understand the sentiment, the registrar cannot
steal what one doesn't "own" if they don't pay for it any longer.

Just use a reliable registrar like Dynadot, Moniker, or GoDaddy.

Don't buy from reseller... always from from root ICANN-Accredited Registrars.
Or.. If you have many domain names, you may wish to have a domain reseller account under a reputed ICANN-Accredited Registrars, like resellerclub.com

It will not happen unless you do not pay for the renewal. As stated by others, it is best to stick with the most reputable ones. I think Namecheap is best but there are others like GoDaddy that are reputable.

Chances that your domain becomes that popular that they would want to steal it is slim. However, they would not have been in business for as long as they have if they stole popular domains.

Domainsite is a great registrar. I don't have many names with them, but the ones I have there are worth a pretty penny.
