When your using negative keywords will you put some in right from the beginning or do you wait and let your ads run for some time before beginning to ad negative keywords?

I usually put some negative keywords in the beginning, then see if adjustment is needed.

    Beginning for me, too.

"Free" is a keyword I use on a regular basis. You don't want people clicking your ad, expecting free stuff. Wasted money.

    Regards,

Certainly, if they are obvious or you have a good imagination for the less likely terms that may trigger your ads.

Or, you can use the keyword suggestion tool to put in the positive keywords you already have and see what phrases people are searching on that include your words. Any that are not relevant to your campaign can be added as negatives or take the specific word (from the phrase) you don't want to trigger your ad and list it as negative broad match.

If you ever run a broad matched keyword without negative matches you're doing it wrong.

I've never seen a case in all the years I've worked with AdWords where not including negative matches from the start was a good idea. When I see accounts set up this way it's a sign of a inexperienced campaign manager.

Use Analytics to see what keyword searches are bring people to your site and use negatives to eliminate unwanted traffic.

Beat me to it. This is good advice.

Certainly not a good idea but it may be difficult where negatives are not obvious. There is a "default" list however that is always a good start, although you should make sure to carefully screen the list before adding them as negatives.

I hate when people use free as a negative keyword, I see no point in using that

How bizarre! What difference does it make to you if I use "free" as a negative? Anyway, how would you possibly know?

If so, I have to question whether you 'see the point' of, or understand the purpose of, negative keywords at all?

Even just using the GKWT and selecting the negative match option is a great way to start.
