    White hat SEO is the proper and well...for lack of a better word...legal method of optimizing...things like writing good meta tags, keyword rich content, including h tags, link building, etc. Black hat oppositely uses tactics like keyword stuffing and cloaking.

    @ andy5925 i think both are necessary either black hat or white hat sometime or other to make our online business grow and for one who want to be at good ranking in Google, I think for newbie first of all do find the topic, category for which competition is less,

    as if I being a google Searcher , Search for a particular phrase or word which is limited on internet and there just on your site or blog and then you will be able to be get into no 1 on many search engines and going to get free traffic just by Good SEO.:p

    Hakim. You will never get a quality answer from a poor question.

    Do you want to be first in Google for 'real estate" - good luck with that or possibly "childrens furniture" ? , then you stand a much better chance. But if you want to be first in Google for " how to catch fish on the moon while knitting a sweater" I guarantee you should be number one overnight. Then you will be able to boast a number one Google search engine ranking just like most seo companies do i.e for a phrase with no competition and also no value.

    But anyway you asked the question in good faith ( although niavely ) so I have one answer for you - build links...and not just a few, but thousands. When you next get tempted to read an ebook about intenet marketing dont do it...build links instead. If the book shows you great ways to get links then and only then read it.
