Its terribly complex. You submit a site that fits their guidelines to an appropriate category, then move on and hope it gets listed.

Well, there are 590,000 categories and only around 5700 editors...so no matter how unique or useful your site is there just simply aren't enough editors to be able to get to your submission in a timely manner.

LOL I have, I was declined, I just don't think I'm cut out to be an editor on that directory. I have two sites I'm working on and another two after that, so my time is limited.

The directory states 81,728 editors - quite a few more than the 5700 you quote :p

That's the number of editor accounts that there have been since the project started. The number of currently live accounts is smaller.

Nope. Anything you do after submitting the site is like pushing the button on the elevator again.

That's right, it's currently around 5700 active editors - and active means they log in and make at least one edit every four months - and that edit does NOT have to be adding a site.

So you see it's not hard to get in because of the strict review process - it's hard to get in because there aren't a lot of editors and the editors we do have are not required to add sites.

Yes. You can volunteer for the category that you want to list your site in.

Even if it already has an editor, you can still volunteer.

Do not tell them which sites you are associated with, they don't like that, it reeks of self promotion. (I know it's wrong, sorry dmoz but it's the only way, they really frown on webmasters whether they admit it or not.)

Choose a lower level, very specific category.

Do your research and choose three really good sites as suggestions for your category on your application. They like the bbc, government sites, .edu sites, non profit informational, etc. Just choose sites that have a lot of unique and useful information that is directly related to your category.

Use correct English in your descriptions, use spell check, and use the real title of the site as the title. Your descriptions should accurately describe what the user will find on the site without being promotional.

That's pretty much it. Once you are in then you can add your own site.

And just so you know, doing all that is a waste of time as far as SEO, but you can do it just for fun and/or to say that you did it.

And might I add they are SO lucky to have you around to enhance their image.

3D - It's a bad idea to follow the route specified there. I realize Winifred doesn't think so, but Winifred is mistaken. You dont want to lie about your affiliations on the app.

I have some advice. Will your Website to your children, so they can will it to their children. Maybe in a couple generations your site will be listed if its not caught up in probate court...

The DMOZ is the most popular directory on the planet. I could only imagine the spam submissions they get in comparison to what we get. Submit and forget about it. Don't keep submitting cause that is a waste of time (both yours and theirs)...

We are a sneaky, tricky, slippery bunch. ;)

I'm not mistaken. If you want to become an editor and list your own sites you will dramatically increase your chances by not listing your affiliations.

Don't use your real name, and don't use an email address that is associated with your sites.

If the site is listable what's the problem? It's just avoiding prejudice.

As long as honesty isnt important... no problem. Unless of course the applicant gets caught, then they're guaranteed to be blackballed for following your advice.
[And you neednt remind me you're convinced such things are untraceable... we disagree on that too.]

No, conforming to the guidelines isnt the same as "avoiding prejudice". I won't bother explaining, integrity matters to some people, it's one of those things you either get or you don't.

If that's all that will happen then why not give it a try?

Well dmoz itself and all the editors are honest so I guess your right it is important to be honest when dealing with dmoz, psych.

Like I said last time, just tell me how it's done and I'll be the first one to admit that I'm wrong. If it's secret information available only to editors then tell me where it is within dmoz, I am an editor so I'll be able to see it. You never sent me the info last time - because it does not exist.
