i registered a domain name yesterday and just found that this domain were registered by 3 owners. I dont know who it is but domaintools asking for membership.

should i be worried? will previous owners come and ask for their domain. i dont think they have trademarked it.

If they would really care about the domain, they would renew. If not ... rebranding is the answer :)

domain is yours, It's their fault to let the domain expire but may be you can turn this in to a great opportunity.. May be you can sell your domain to them

selling is not my intention. i plan to start a good website with it.
What i am most worried is once my website gets popular after 1yr and what would happen if they come after me?

I dont mind throwing some $50 dollars to register another domain and i dont want any risk.

The domain is yours, people buy and use dropped domains all the time.

You can check to see if there used to be a site there using the wayback machine at archive.org

If you are lucky there may be backlinks to the domain, you can check for links using yahoo.

If you are unlucky the domain has been banned by google but you should be able to get reincluded if you contact them through webmasters tools.

Well, you might as well not register any domain name if that's the case. Most
if not everything in life has risks, after all.

The risk that its former "owner" might go after you will always be there. But it
is their burden to demonstrate their enforceable claims...if they have any.

One thing I can suggest, though, is ensure your current use doesn't possibly
infringe their trademarks, if any. If one of them used the domain name before
to promote a product or service with the same name, don't put content that
    might be associated with it.

Other than that, just continue on with what you're doing. If any of those folks
complain in the future, be ready to talk to an attorney to deal with it.

    What's life without risks?

Dropped domains are normal. I bought a dropped once and Whois didn't updated it for a week. Sometimes I got NS problem but it was worth the shot.
Don't worry to much and follow what the Dan dude said. :)
p/s- you can always reg a free account at whois.sc you know.

Thanks people ::D . here is what i did.

I spent another $10 and took another domain with dashes. I know that i have wasted $30 (with domain i registered for 3 yrs) and its a small amount compared to the risk. Now i launched my site with peace of mind :D

what risk? don't be stupid, there is no risk. Are you really going to use a shitty domain with dashes because of some risk that exists only in your head?

If that domain don't contains any trademark of any company then I don't think there is any risk involved

... and if domain is infringing any copyright, dashes wont help. Can you tell us what is your domain name?
