    Does it have any value in optimizing the site??

    No, its very much a myth. If its a factor then its a secondary factor. Don't waste time start linking to google and yahoo.

    waste of an external link. if you wanna link to somewhere, find an authority site or an article posted on an authority site in your related nich and link to that. linking to google or yahoo will do nothing

    No, there is not any benefits to put such links on your website. Instead it will increase your outgoing links and spread the PR weight.
    so it is advisable not to put such link to get benefit of SEO as it is worthless.
