    Bob,

What sort of budget would you think someone needs to have to submit to all the best paid directories? I know you've listed them with price there, however if you had access to a lot of funds, for directory submission, what would you attack and why?

Say you've already given your $100 for someone to do the free ones, and now you are left holding a fist full of money and lots of paid directories in front of you.

silencer: I would start for the top down and leave all the "up to x links..." to the last. As far as you budget question. If you are refering to my list then you can just add up the prices as they are there.

If you are refering to all the pay directories then that is a differnet question. I would say you could spend between $700 and $2,000 quite easily.

I would say you need over $10,000 to submit to all the paid directories. I wouldn't do it because there are many people charging for PR4 directories. I keep finding new ones everyday that I had never heard about.

CanadianEh: I don't thing PR is a good criteria or the only criteria for deciding whether to submit to a site or not. One of the most important items is that the web directories pages are getting into the search engine index.

In this way the links you have from the directories will give your more ranking weight and hence your page(s) will be higher in the search engines results position. PR doesn't really matter much more for ranking, and links from low PR web directories offer pretty well the same amount of ranking weight for keyword in the anchor text as those of with higher PR.

PR is definately not the only criteria but it is good to use when you want to make a quick assessment, without having to do in depth research into a sites links and history.

    Bob
Are you saying that Google treats links the same, whether it is a link on a PR9 site like CNN or one burried 5 levels deep on someone's link page? Are you saying that Google have given up on Brin and Page's PageRank calculation? They may have added other factors such as relevance but I don't think they have thrown it out.

CanadianEh: Going to simple tools like http://www.seocompany.ca/tool/indexed-pages.php you can quickly check how many pages there are in the index of the of the 5 main search engines for a site. And you can check 10 sites at a time with this tools. I would hold that finding out the number of documents in each index is much more important that the PR of the home page. So there is not really "in depth research" needed, just a good utility add the URL and click on check now.

As far as Google treating a link from a PR9 site and one from a PR1 page the same, no I don't think they treat them the same. I did how ever note (the general opinion of SEO's is) that PR in and of it self doesn't have have much ranking weigth. I didn't note any thing about Google giving up on the PR calculation, if fact I took the position post-Oct 6/2005 that PR was not dead.

I would how ever say that what PR really tells us now is how many IBL's you have and how many IBL's the pages have that your IBL's are on. IBL's are important as they bring click though traffic, rankings for the site they are pointed at via the keyword in the anchor text weight, and hence SE traffic, and of course you need a few high (PR4-6) links to get GoogleBot to index your site.

With the TPR only being updated every 3 months (106, 87, 111 dates on the last 3 updates - 101 days on average) there will be good directories out there that are PR0. A check on the number of pages will tell us quick a bit on those directories.

Why bother. We are talking about paid directories here. There are hundreds to chose from. I said I would pay for a PR6-7 rather than a PR4. There are many paid directories in which your listing will be placed on an actual PR4 page. Ideally you are looking for a high PR page that has few listings. It doesn't matter how many pages are indexed.

Looking at the numbers, I can't look at Directory A and say that it is better because it has twice as many pages indexed as Directory B. If you coudl tell me that Directory A has 500 pages and 495 of the pages are indexed then I would find that information useful.

Many directories have gone too far in creating deep category structures (sometimes 5 and 6 levels deep) with thousands of empty pages. Sure they may have 1000 pages indexed, but it doesn't help if your listing on the 5th level down is not indexed.

I would say that you should have about $200 budget for submitting to some of the best paid directories. My useful collection of some of the best paid directories: http://www.paiddirectories.info worth submitting to.

    Matt,

If I would have $100 for paid web directory submission I would submit my web site in Directory Journal Web Directory,
paying for a $99.95 Featured Listing, which allows 5 deep links, too.

    ARGUMENTS

    1. PR6 homepage
    2. on level 1* it has many PR5 internal pages
    3. on level 2** it has many PR3 & PR4 pages
    4. 5,810 Google back-links
    5. 235,000 Yahoo back-links
    6. 6,5/10 page strength, according to seomoz.org
    7. Outstanding Alexa traffic rank: 68,008

IMPORTANT: I has NO interest in promoting dirjournal.com. This post is the result of my convictions.

*level 1 = 1 click from the homepage
**level 2 = 2 clicks from the homepage
