    I haven't tried all of them, but for the few I know about, it's pretty much you submit interesting stuff and get links for it. For example, in the case of Slashdot & Digg, the news stories they run are user submitted. If you submit a story about your own product or site & it is selected, then obviously you just got featured for free. However, you can also submit articles about stuff that has nothing to do with your site and still get tons of traffic, because your byline is usually listed as a link to your own site.
