1. ad, selling links/ad space, charging for sticky thread, etc. 2. it depends. if you found a good niche forums and good community then you will earn more money on forums. in forums, the content will be added by users not by you. but in blogs you need to add content. 3. no idea. I think blogs are a better choice for lazy webmasters. It takes a lot of effort and time to build a genuinely active community from scratch. I run an active forum and find it really time consuming as a lot of time is lost in moderating the forum.. IMO, unless one is a real expert in the niche, trying to start a forum isn't advisable.
It is easier to build and maintain a blog than forum of course. Both generate income in the same way.
Forums can earn only if you have a huge active member base or you can go for those fix per month ads like link sales or matched ones.
The same could be said with any site. I think having an active forum is better. building a community of members that supply content on a daily basis is the best. having a base of members gives you so many options
Through the use of google adsense and paid links. I don't have a forum site, but I do have blogs, so I guess blogs earn more than forums. Both. I was looking over the net of different blogs and forums lists. And I must say that they are everywhere.

Yes blogs are better and less time consuming for a start so i expect more people go for blogs than forums. a forum really relies on a loyal userbase visiting reguarly where as blogs can make you money in a variety of ways. personally i use them to funnel traffic to my key sites those which are built around specific niches to sell specific products. 3) Are there more forums or blogs on the Internet (in total)? I would hazzard a guess at blogs.
The other way to earn money via forum is to sell the sticky threads. This has already been discussed but link sales and selling banners is the only way to earn money via forums
Forums are hard work to get going and earn little revenue when you have just started out but i use adsense and adbrite i also have a few Blogs with same setup but they earn hardly anything.
To be honest i find that quite insulting, i have wrote many blogs and found them so easy, the take little time and are purely your ideas so no one can interfere. Whereas forums needs imense promotiong as it's harder to get someone to register and make a useful post than it is to read a bit of writing. I assume you don't have a forum, if you do you probably don't moderate it much as like one person posted it is very time consuming.
