OK, first you need to start using absolute urls.

You link to index.htm and you should link to www.yoursite.co.uk

Now I don't have the first clue about EPOS Software but it looks pretty competitive to me. You are going to need more than your current 51 google backlinks to compete I guess.

Why does your site deserve to be ranked on the first page of google? Is it better or more relevant that the sites already listed?

You have a list of things down the right hand side of the homepage (Benefits of EPOS) that would make great articles on your site.

Turn each one into a full page article and focus on making great content on your site.

If you want to rank on the first page of google your site has to truly deserve to be there more than the others.

The figures you saw were wrong.

that's probably due to all the problems with google de-indexing pages that's going on at the moment.

Do you have enough links with anchor text = "epos software"? The couple of links I checked didn't have that phrase as anchor text.

fair comment, but if you look at quite a few of the other sites, we have a lot more content and try to give more information out to the user ie information on chip and pin credit card technology that's currently being introduced, benefits of having epos systems etc. So I think we do have a genuine reason to be somewhere within the top 3 pages at least!

If you want to write an article then I can submit it to 225 sites. This will build your links and you can use "epos software" as the anchor text.

Since its summer I will do it for free. :)

the top 10 sites back links are
    2, none, 41, 9, none, 2, none, 15, 80

There are a couple of links within the site for 'epos software' but i've tried to keep the link text different from other pages so it doesn't look spammy.

Good point. In that case given that you have an old site then there is nothing to stop you being number 1 for your search term with some work.

I have one site that has less than 40 links and ranks in the top 10 at google, but I would still agree with Mad4 that you need to increase your links and his/her offer with the anchor text/article distribution sounds excellent.

Here's what I'd do in the meantime...

provide a tighter focus on your keyword EPOS Software, drop some of your keywords and really hone in, in your description and title.

only found one h1 and that has extra wording in it, cut it back to your keyword

add in a couple of h2's and spread the keyword focus a little

rename your images to epos_software.jpg or epos.jpg

    change your alt tags accordingly

2.52% saturation or 15 occurrences of the word epos might be a little high, perhaps pull 3 or 4 (I think this might be the main issue a little too spammy?)

make the text epos software the first thing the spider finds when hitting your page and the last thing it sees at the bottom - not sure if that is clear... you need your keywords top of the page and bottom of it too.

and now the good news.... you do actually appear in google, you're just ranking 343rd!.. it can only get better :)

Never give up, never surrender... never :D

You should have your site map link on each page. Try and trim the size of your pages down and reduce or eliminate the use of tables. If you are not already doing so, begin posting on industry forums. Wherever possible set up your signature. Add a link in your sig to your website. Be sure to use good keyword anchors in your link so don't do this:

    <a href="YOUR SITE HERE">look at my site</a>

    DO this:

    <a href=YOUR SITE HERE">epos software</a>

Any outbound links from your site that are not sites you are trying to promote should have a rel=nofollow tag in the href.

So irrelevant links should look like this:

    <a href="TARGET SITE HERE" rel="nofollow">irrelevant site</a>

Hope that helps a bit! Good luck!

Right, keep getting good links, build content, blog ... do whatever. Stop watching your rankings (or the lack thereof) for a while and apply your skills.

Months and months? SEO takes years, especially for the new google. It also depends a lot for what keyword you're optimizing for.

"EPOS Software" should be easy to optimize for...

If you compare your site to the top ones listed on google for "epos software" you will find your site isn't optimized as best it could be.

The top site is http://www.actinic.co.uk - its epos software page is a pr6, your homepage is a 3. Your homepage has 51 backlinks while actininc's sub page has 41, almost as many.

Your title is clouded with keywords that people might not search for. Your title is currently "EPOS Software Solutions. XSell EPOS Software for Retail" - it could be "EPOS Software"

Anyway, that's all the help I can give right now. I wouldn't give up on optimizing for google though.

    - oh I forgot one last thing... You might want to consider switching to a pure css layout for your site. You have a lot of excess code that is bogging your content down.

    Peace.
