It depends on what country you're in and what you're selling. So tell us, what country are you in and what are you selling?

Paypal should be on top of your list as most people are using Paypal for buying online.

    I like using authorize.net
You can use them with a combination with paypal for pretty much any shopping cart. I find using authorize.net and paypal together is quite effective. You can't miss a sale ;)

    3rd Party, I'd say PayPal

For your own merchant account, I'd recommend finding an Authorize.net reseller.

You may want to take a look at 2CO , it seems to be good as it can accept PayPal from your customers and process credit cards.

PayPal would be my 2nd choices.

    Hope this helps

2Co is good and highly secure. You can send invoices by mail. Payments are automatically sends to bank. Alertpay is also a good alternative. You could check charges of these two options.

Yes there is no match for paypal merchant account. But if your country is not paypal listed then 2checkout is the best.

You only need one gateway. There are free gateways and then there is paypal. Paypal is fine if you don't plan on processing more than 1000-2500 per month. If you do more you should get a real merchant account.
