I have FTP access, what is the best way to edit a page?

I have a professionally built website, they gave me FTP access so I can edit information, add contact info, and simple things like that. I downloaded Filezilla, but I don't quite know how to use it. When I click Open/Edit on a php file on the remote side, I get a message that the file can't be opened. Do I need special software to open and edit php files? I'd appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.

try a program like "flashFXP", you can edit files remotely and its a really cool tool

30 day free trial too, but it seems to last for months and i don't know why! give it a shot and see how you do!

your better off downloading the file to your comp and using notepad or a similar text editor to edit that file.
then, using ftp, you can upload it. always make backups of the files you edit just in case.

if you have $60 to spare, you can get an app that mounts a drive to that ftp-connection, enabling you to work with ftp files like any normal file through any windows program.. no need for those download- and upload-steps each time.

    free trial at webdrive.com/download/index.html

bad advice, your wanting to edit php files, use a text editor or you'll regret it.

dreamweaver and php files don't play well together.

Download from Filezilla (double click) then edit it using Notepad, then upload the newly edited file (double click).

    So many hopeless replies here..

I'd recommend a different FTP program then filezilla. Try SmartFTP or CuteFTP. Once you have one of these - connect to the server with the host (usually ftp.mysite.com), username and password given to you. Now you are in there, use a text editor (please, don't use Dreamweaver) to edit the individual files.

Hopeless replies, huh? So what's the difference between these 'hopeless replies' and your post?

I didn't say that yours was one - so don't go and get defensive. I was referring to replies like "open it in notepad". This would mean nothing to the OP and wouldn't help them at all.

If you find ftp too difficult to set up, then you can probably access the files through your control panel and edit them there.
