its simple if u do it right
    sit back
take a while and study first
then all is simple and easy for all future
    here some URLs
    http://www.unixcities.com/howto/index3.html
    http://www.scrye.com/~kevin/lsh/march-00/Security-HOWTO-5.html

    and of course
    you read the much easier

    man chmod

    do recursive chmod
make sure you know what you do
after all installation make sure you SECURE all site

    and

    above all!!!
be aware that TODAY and yesterday and days until you LEARNED your job is the very best day for hackers to intrude and install whatever they love
    as a general rule
starting day ONE before any apache is setup - before any domain runs on your server .... you WILL have hackers !!!

I did so as of day one - may be even hour one some 2 years ago
and yesterday i ordered/got my new second server and also found hackers knocking ......

    use google
you need anwers within minutes or at max hours

NOW to manage your own server may appear huge to you
a few thousand hours/years later you'll be happy
I would under no circumstances want to go back and surrender full control to host!
    God bless

open your favorit ssh client such as putty ( google it if you dont have ).

    1. login as root
    2. go to the folder you wish to chmod, basic commands are ls (list a directory) , cd (change directory e.g. cd home)
    3. chmod 755 *.* -R , do it recursively if your really having a hard time. ( 755 for secure directory , 644 for files )

    4. chmod --help if you need more options.

    best of luck. :D

You can do this with some FTP clients like FlashFXP if you need this for a particular folder. But I'd suggest you to hire a server administrator...
