Obama's First Priority?

Since his election i've basically stepped back and haven't really kept up with what Obama has said since then. However, I was at lunch with co-workers today and they said that they had read or heard from CNN or other official news sources that Obama came out publicly and stated that Gun Control was his first priority. Is this factual?

It would be smart to make his first order of business to disarm America so he can ram the other stuff through.

If you did it any other way there'd be a revolution. haha

Thanks for the news source. I read it, but it was primarily about what Democrats who elected Obama in want him to do and not what he will actually do. Based on what I can find, it will be today that he has his first Press conference since he has been elected, so i'm not sure where my co-workers got this. Perhaps no one knows at this point?

Well, in a debate he listed his top priorities, and Gun Control wasn't on the list of the top 4, I'm sure CNN would have some article about it by now.

Yeah, while i'm not trying to start an age old debate here on the forums, I am confident that much like a gay marriage ban that gun control is not something the American people want as a general rule of thumb. I have to admit, not being an Obama supporter I am a skeptic of what he will actually do as President. He has a terrible record when it comes to gun control and wouldn't be surprised if this is something he wanted to accomplish as President but didn't make it known during his campaign.

Obviously, education, energy, economy, and healthcare (I watched the debate but can't remember exactly the things that were stated by him) would be the options to discuss for a candidate because no one thinks "Hey, I oppose improvement on our healthcare system" unless you're just stupid. ;)

I remember seeing Obama state in an interview that he would like to see stricter gun control laws, but he acknowledged his ability to implement them would be very restricted. Wish I could remember what interview that was...

Anyway, as a staunch supporter of 2nd amendment rights, his gun control stance is (for me) the most troubling of Obama's views.

I agree that it is troublesome. I'm hoping, even though our Congress is mainly Democrats, that he would not be able to get anything that would threaten the 2nd past them.

And if he tries to take our protection from the government away, I pray that we will stand up against that....

I've seen nothing re: the Second Amendment. PHP, if you've a source, I'd appreciate seeing it.

I have seen - from several sources - that at the first meeting with reporters since the election, he indicated the economy is his top priority, which is in line with what he has said many times - very clearly, in fact, in Debate 2.

I'd be extremely surprised - beyond belief, absent any proof - that somehow second amendment issues have now skyrocketed to top priority for the President-Elect. Sorry, have to say I sniff another baseless rumor, unless I see something showing otherwise.

    Make You All a Bet
There WILL be gun control legislation passed in his first 100 days in office. Debating whether he said he'd do it or not is neither here nor there. First 100 days is where you find out what their real priorities are. All else is just campaign rhetoric.
    • If I'm wrong - I'll come back to this thread and apologize for my suspicious nature.
    • If I'm Right - Anyone that says it isnt a big priority of Obama on the basis that he didnt admit it in his stump speeches is similarly invited to apologize for being naive.

Anybody that wants to argue that it isn't high on his agenda feel free to take me up on it. ;)

I don't know if Rob is still ignoring my posts, but I'd have to say, Rob (if you're watching), that this isn't an accurate assessment. Lots of stuff will likely transpire in the first 100 days. In other words, not trying to be snide (truly) but if sometime over the next 100 days he signed into law that the Montana Bugloss is to be recognized as a federally protected wildflower, would this mean that natural history is now his top priority?

A better measure would be if gun control trumped his energies via-a-vis the economic crisis. If we could find a way to show he put off the latter, to deal with the former, I'd take your wager.

    PHP:

In all seriousness he announced his first priority is the economy.

He removed himself from the press till today.

I'm surprised that someone could even come up with the concept about gun control.

So many big issues with which to deal; the economy, energy, 2 wars, the economy, the economy, and also the economy.

So many issues with which there is no reason to deal. IMHO, gun control is so relatively unimportant compared to the issues above.

Aw cmon earl... you look like a bettin man. :-p

Actually even though there's nothing but a confession on the line this would be a bad bet to take me up on. Gotta feeling the left wing is gonna try to outrun FDR's standing record for the most sweeping changes in the first 100 days.

They pay lip service to the 2nd amendment for reasons of electability (apparently it became obvious to them that being an opponent of the second thing the founders stuck into the bill of rights might not be popular accross the board), but chipping away at it has been a pretty consistent goal of the DNC hardliners for a long time. Only reason they *might* hold off is to try and suck the left side of the GOP into supporting other legislation before they ram the tough stuff past 'em.

Still, despite the caveat above, I think my bet's pretty safe.

Heheh, Rob, I am a bettin man...but virtual world bettin does nothing for me.

meanwhile, maybe I'm not that far on the left, or maybe you guys see too much of the bogeyman in the Dems. Somehow I don't see gun control as anywheres close in the horizon.

I happen to think some of the nebulousness in the Obama "change" message was reflected by the keynote speaker at the Dem convention, Mark Warner.

His speech got zero publicity. It also was not a typical convention speech by either party. He didn't whup on the GOP.

He actually spoke about non-partisanship. His history as candidate and governor of Virginia was both to not deal with gun control, but to support existing Virginia right to gun ownership laws.

I frankly hope it is not an issue.

Meanwhile, since you didn't win the presidential election...and since I think your gonna lose that bet, I also think you should take up my suggestion for a screen name. ;)

Actually I never got the impression you were "far left", wasnt indicating that. Just recall when Clinton-Gore won the first time they said their first priority was to "focus like a laser beam on the economy". Then the first thing they did was to get busy on the social stuff like gays in military. Frankly in the case of the bet I made here, I'd be thrilled to be wrong.

its not his mission to take our guns
if it was it wouldn't be a successful one
just remember as Thomas Jefferson said
"the beauty of the 2nd amendment is that we won't need it till they try to take it"
Thats why the 2nd amendment exist
