Hello DP members, Contrary to our past policies, we at Google have now decided to adopt more active communication with webmasters and as such I am here to let you know of new policies that will be implemented as of 1/1/2009. Policy 1: Linking policy As you all know, we have developed our great search engine based on technology that views links between sites as a webmasters vote for another site. This technology has served us well for some time; however we have now come to the conclusion that webmasters can simply no longer be trusted to decide on who they should link to. I think if you look at the situation in all fairness, you will agree that you are simply getting it wrong. Sites are linking to off topic sites, and indeed some sites link to sites that are not what we believe to be our exact idea of which site should be linked to. As such, as of 1/1/2009, we will ask that no webmaster ever place a link to another site on their site. We will provide you with code that will automatically insert links on your site that comply with our ideas of what you should be linking to. Of course this will be optional, however please understand that any site that does not comply with this policy will be excluded from our index. Additionally, as there is an unfortunate position that even when we exclude you, you site may get traffic from other sources, we will also be taking the step of redirecting any traffic to your site from a user that is using the Google toolbar to another site that complies with our policies. Policy 2: Spam control We have concluded that some niches in the internet (e.g. weight loss, gambling, and indeed any field with significant affiliate opportunities) have now become so overridden with spam that these niches are simple beyond repair. We believe it is our obligation to not send any traffic to these fields at all now. As such, when a user queries a keyword relating to one of these fields, the first three pages of the results will simply be blank. We are hoping this will allow our users to realize they should simply not be looking at these fields and will decide to move on to a query in a more Google compliant niche. I am sure most of you will see the wisdom in our new policies, and those that don’t are obviously simple web spammers that these very measures are trying to counter.
