Which URL Structure is best for SEO. Subdomain or Folder?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by BCRed, Oct 26, 2008.

Quick question here. Is there any difference from an SEO perspective in theses urls:

    http://subdomain.site.com
    http://site.com/subfolder/

I'm trying to decide how to best structure my new website and was wondering whether doing it either way would have any difference whatsoever.

    Any thoughts or insight appreciated

I have the same concern, in fact I chose the subfolder for a blog and I'm doubting if my choice was right, you can read about it here http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1082842

I guess the answer is it depends. If the new site is a real independent site, maybe better subdomain, but if the niche and the keywords are the same, maybe better subfolder.

SE's view subdomains as entirely independent sites. the best choice for your site depends on what the intended use is.

for me subdomain is more advantage when it comes to seo and of course using your main keyword on the url.

Hmmm... thanks for the replies. I'm asking this because I'm making a blog that I want to integrate with my main page as I'm going to be using its quality content to help drive links to the domain and strengthen it overall.

Am I correct in guessing that site.com/blog is the better format for this?

its according to ur site nature. If it different category use subfolder. If another service use sub domain.

That will be absolutely new domain name and you will need to work on it separately from site.com. You will need double you efforts.
This one is better for SEO as for me.

Then your situation is almost the same as mine was, I chose subfolder and I think that was a mistake, I'm still waiting someone to give me an opinion about it

I think it's important for you to have clear if the blog adds information to the main site or maybe can confuse the SE with more keywords and destroy your work. In my situation, the keywords for the main site were very clear, but now the blog having longer titles destroyed that a little bit. In fact it seems like SE are thinking that maybe the blog is even more important because I update it often than the main site that is almost static, and I start to rank well with other keywords related more with the posts titles.

    I write again the link

I've decided what I'll do is use a folder as opposed to a subdomain since I do want to boost the overall pagerank of the domain using the blog. I'm also going to put in a 301 from the subdomain to the folder, so that I can use that address for branding while still building pagerank

This question comes up a lot.

I will always use a subfolder.

Reason: because a subfolder uses the strength of the rest of your site.
A subdomain is seen as a new site by google, so you are starting from the beginning. i.e you have to get it indexed, build lots of backlinks...

Well, maybe this will give you some insight:

We can rank in the top 10 on Google for the same keywords for two domains
    seo,gotwebhost.com and gotwebhost.com

Pretty sure that would not happen if it was set up as gotwebhost.com/seo/

I would use a subfolder with your keyword. With the reasoning I explained in my above post.

That's nice, but if you had 2 results in the top 10 wouldn't it be better to have them consolidated and go for #1 with a single listing. I guess I can see the benefit of trying to get a second page in the top 10 if you've already locked down #1, but clearly my site is brand new and I've just some more pressing initial concerns, such as getting any of its pages to rank well for anything
