The UK has plenty of coal in Wales and they have been reopening mines in the last years. Not every country is going to buckle under to Russian sabre rattling.

    Right on:

"UK gas supplies are running out":

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/3401083.stm

Having plenty of oil/gas/whatever underground doesnt always mean you can easily get it. Otherwise, who would ever rely on the "so bad Russia", if you have your own everything, huh? :)

By the way, back on topic, the russian budget for 2009 is set assuming the price on oil is $70 a barrel not 140 like it was, so not much to worry about.

Surley that is not a good thing! Putin has tried to poison the president of the Ukraine, is consolidating power, and actively setting Russia up for a conflict with the US. He arms and supports rogue nations such as Iran, Venezuela, and North Korea and is actively threatening Poland. He wants the Ukraine back so bad he can taste it and he's willing to start a world war to do it.

Actually I'm going to start a new thread on this.

    Oh yeah! A lil correction:

"Putin actively threatening american weapons in Poland". Now figure who starts this, Russia or US. Is Russia planting weapons on Cuba or US planting it in Europe ?

Does anyone know if it collapsed or did it open again? Canadian Dollar dropped a lot too since this low oil pricing!

    Ummmm,

Why is Russia arming Venezuela to the teeth?
Why is Russia training Venezuelan troops?
Why are Russian war ships exersizing off the coast of Venezuela?

Read my other post I just put up, I explain why there.

    Because:

US armed Georgia ($1 bln army budget by the way)
    US trained Georgian troops
    US warships in Georgia

Now figure what happened first, US reached Georgia or Russia reached Venezuela, and you will find who is the bully here.

Okay, its time for UEFA Cup, CSKA are playing, I will be back :)

Different reason, if we didn't help the breakaway states Putin was going to roll back over them and take them back.

I think Russia proved it's self when she tried to poison Viktor Yushchenko. It's obvious Putin wants the Ukraine back so bad he can taste it, it's up to us to stop him.

haha, US helped Georgia ? What a load of bs, if Russia had plans to capture the whole Georgia, we would do it in 3 days, and wouldnt sit and wait there for xmas and american warships. The only reason our troops stayed there till October (yes, since August), is to demilitarize the military bases, which we did. Plus US did not play a major role, read the Sarkozi-Medved plan.

HAHA! The only reason you didn't roll over Georgia and take them in 3 days because you knew the US, Germany, the UK, and France would run you back out!

You pushed as far as you thought you could without going to far over the line. You're testing the waters, seeing how far you can push. It was a fact gathering mission plain and simple.

We didnt attack Georgia, thats what you are missing, we pulled them back and reacted on their attack, as of result, Georgia lost South Ossetia and Abkhaziya officially now, in any way you look at it, Russia won.

You really believe that the Russian KGB government didn't set that whole thing in motion it's self? You really believe that Russia isn't encouraging the breakaway region militia to go and torch villages and raise hell in Georgia?

The "encouraging to go and torch villages and raise hell" between ossetians and georgians were in place since the USSR collapse, but no one officially was declaring a war. And if you wanna know the Georgian military is much stronger than Ossetian in any way, compare the too if you have enough time. Why then make georgians a victim since they attacked ?? Do you encourage a country that "wanted to live in piece with ossetians" to go and bomb some 50K ossetian town? Is that how democracy works? Why not attract them with a different method? Cos theres no other methods, Georgia lives in povetry, so as South Ossetia.

Yes, I really believe that Georgia DID a mistake by attacking South Ossetia on a full scale. I live 2,5 hours drive from that place (refugees fled to my region too), and who else would "really" know better, you?

Georgian forces are stronger but the Ossetian and South Russian militias are armong themselves with cheap weapons and constantly harassing Georgia with artillery attacks.

In the North Caucasus, illegal weapons are cheap and readily available.

North Ossetia is home to dozens of military units belonging to both the regular Russian army and the interior ministry. Soldiers, many of whom are on short-term contracts, can move easily between the Chechen conflict zone and North Ossetia, making it a simple matter to traffic weapons.

    And whats the point?

North Ossetia = Russia as well as Chechnya = Russia and they can have as many weapons as they wish.

The point is, it was a mistake to attack and declare a WAR against South Ossetia, Georgia knew that Russia has interests in that region + russian citizens, they thought Bush would back them up, but Bush isnt a complete idiot to go in full direct confrontation with Russia, just because some unprofessional leader made a mistake.

Anyways, we are waaaaay off topic. Lets end it.
