Silly question, I am new to back links so stick with me on this.

Its important to have back links (as I have learnt) however is it important that the sites linking back to you are relevant to your site? Or are all back links good?

 

Yes, relevancy is very important.

 

Anybody have experience with how well commenting on relevant blogs that accept dofollow links (using comment luv or similar plugins) works? Is this a worthwhile linking strategy? I'd really live to hear from others who have seen good results or bad. Thanks.

Some people swear that you should only get backlinks from relevant sites. I find that this simply isn't so on my sites. Look at it this way. Google is getting more and more sophisticated in how it examines the growth of a website. As a website grows in popularity (assuming it's organic growth and not due to the site being overly seo-optimized by a professional seo person) the site will start to achieve backlinks from many types of sites. Not just sites related to that niche or keyphrase.

I like to go "wide" and "narrow" in my approach to back link building. I get friends with non-relevant yet high ranking sites to link back to me. I comment on news sites, general interest sites, entertainment sites for a do-follow return link. And then a portion of my backlinking strategy goes toward building backlinks from relevant sites only.

This combo of backlinking targets works really well for me and has allowed me to achieve good page rank rather quickly on my affiliate sites - as long as I also continue to post quality content on my sites. Without updating regularly, what I've described might not work so well.

Guys - any list you can find on Google is useless. This stuff is all garbage. If Google know about it and know that people are using it for link development it is useless.

Trust me.

I have a one or two PR6 that no one uses but you'll have to pay to find it out.
