Good idea or bad idea for a new website?

    Hi All,

I'm brand new to this board (via Google) and just want to say that I'm happy to have found it. From the few posts I've read so far, people here seem pretty friendly and helpful which I really do appreciate.

Anyway, I own about 50, decent, marketable domain names that I have yet to develop. Of these, the one that interests me the most is for an idea I have had for a jokes/humor site. Without giving away too much I think the site has a strong potential to attract a lot of repeat traffic and to foster an active forum community. Unfortunately though I also think the only realistic way I would be able to generate any revenues is through banner ads which (as I just read here) doesn't seem to be very lucrative market given the target audience.

So, what are your thoughts? Would I be wasting my time and money developing such a site? I have dozens of other domains for ideas I could pursue, they just don't seem to be as much fun or as interesting. :(

Hi, and welcome to Digital Point.

As you may know, there are plenty of humor/entertainment sites on the web, so if you really want to have a good income, you have to make a site that is different than other sites.

However, a simple, standard site with humor videos etc. CAN give you a good income. One of my friends got about 6 entertainment sites, just simple ones with videos, but he earns pretty good on those sites.

But if your domain really is that good as you say, it would be easy to get some cash.
But you have to decide which ad provider you will be using, there are plenty out there, Google AdSense is one of the most used.

If you want, I can help you developing your site concept or content. I have a big knowledge about seo, website marketing, ideacreation, and I work primary as a freelance web programmer and webdesigner (5 years experience).
You can click on my name to message me.

    Again, welcome to DP.
    Good luck with your websites.

Welcome to digital point. For you can know it does take time for any site to be sucessful. You just need to donate your time and it will be worth it. If you don't want to risk it you can try selling your domain and earn profits that way. It's all up to you and your dedication towards everything. Best of luck:)

    Hello Ryder,

If you believe you could do it, and put all the effort on it, it is pretty much possible it would succeed. Maybe it won't be a big hit, (who knows) but it will be better than just having the domain there with nothing at all. A good domain + unique ideas, good content + design and lot of marketing and promotion makes a website pretty much a decent one or the greatest project.

I'm a web designer and developer who's interested in developing valuable niche websites to make some extra cash and just build great websites, its what I love doing after all. I'm just waiting a couple weeks to save some money which I could invest in new projects. It wouldn't be a bad idea to partner up with some domain owners who have their domains undeveloped with nothing on it and work together so if you're interested, please visit my portfolio and contact me through there.

When there's a will, there's a way. Just go ahead, you will never know if one of the sites will earn you thousands.

Building a high traffic and popular site is the difficult part. Once you have the traffic, monetizing the site to earn you a good steady income becomes easy and is all about testing.

You could make money off banners using a 3rd party like CPX, sell private ads, use CPL offers from azoogle, affiliate with other sites that have products that cater to your demographic (Funny T shirts come to mind as one example for a humor site) There are numerous ways to make money, focus on making the site popular first.

Thanks for your feedback and encouragement everyone. I'm fairly confident that my idea will work as long as a larger site like EBaums or CollegeHumor doesn't rip it off before it has a chance to get established. I'm gonna give it a shot.

Welcome to DP. A website like that would be difficult to compete in but as has been stated, if you really buckle down I am sure you can do well. The real question is can you do better in a different niche with your time. With 50 websites, you will have your hands full in trying to develope them so you want to find a niche that not only you enjoy, but that you can compete in and that will be profitable.

If your project is as good as you told us, you can try a branded entertainment approach, selling your site for a big brand that wants to comunicate with your site's audience.
