You can't have a best strategy because what may work for one website may not work for the other. So in essence you cannot have 'one size fits all' thing in SEM.

 

I alway do on-site SEO first before any off-site SEO work is done.
on-site SEO: make sure the site works in all browsers, make your content unique and make good use of H1 tags, Bold etc etc . . . .
off-site SEO: Link building, social bookmarking, relevant blog commenting... etc etc...
SEO is always on going, tweaking, more link building, more tweaking, you get the point!

 

make your site useful for your visiters. if visiters like your site, google will like it, too.

 

Plenty of good content first, backlink building, sustaining both.

 

Get high quality inbound one way links with anchor text

 

Making a website for more visible to search engine.

Here's my take on your inquiry...

For step one you'll want to use a good analysis tool which looks at the top searches that are driving traffic. Google Trends is one, but there are a host of others. This will begin the process of searching for a subject/product or service that you can use as your marketing target.

With your chosen tool you'll have your fingers literally on the pulse of the best niche finder there is... Finding what is driving for the bulk of Internet searches is definitely #1 in my book.

Step two is deciding on the niche you'll pursue. One reliable method for the decision making part of the process is to create keyword groups that mimic the words searchers will type into the search box to look for information. Chose two or more of your favorite selections from step one and put them through the process that follows.

For example, should one of your choices be quilting, a quilting fan might type…quilting patterns, or… how do I find quilt patterns, or…. easy sew quilt patterns, or …tips for fast sew quilts, and even better, tips for quilting.

By typing your batch of keywords into a tool like the Google Adwords Keyword tool, or one of a dozen or so others, you’ll generate oodles of keywords to use as you build your Internet marketing campaign. You’ll want to select the strongest keywords which you’ll use to create your domain for registering your new website.

Step three is to write a dozen or so articles using an appropriate mixture of the killer keywords, long and short tailed, that you have harvested during your planning stage. Once you’ve built your website and written out your strategy for dominating your competition, you’ll want to start submitting your articles in batches of 2-3 a day for the next 30 days.

Step four is…..going to the bank. Actually, rinse and repeat is the best SEO strategy at this point in your campaign. In other words, once you’ve worked through the first three steps at least 4 times, you will have learned and practiced the most basic steps to SEO mastery.

Naturally, there are lots more practices and strategies to learn, however, Internet marketing is a long term commitment. Success doesn’t happen overnight…it’s a journey, not a sprint.
