You can prove him wrong by finding a few sites that rank for terms in their title after a pipeline that they would not rank for if it was discounted, like the first site in the serps here.

interesting, I'm looking for an online source (trusted) which basically describes how *not* to format a page title for a report..

for example if person a wants a website to rank for

blue sandwiches, green sandwiches, pink apples

would the keywords get picked up if the title was formatted without any divider? (such as , - or | )

I've looked around on the google webmaster help - but can;t find anything concrete

Those two are only our preference. To be say frankly, Search Engines doesn't read that type of pipe lines, dashes or some other. Just we are keeping those only for the Title's good look in our site. So anyone you can use as you like.

    thanks for the replies

I guess my question is though, would google struggle to define the keywords if they are formatted like this

"keyword one keyword two keyword three keyword four"

    instead of

keyword one - keyword two - keyword three - keyword four

and is there a trusted source of info to back this up?

Google doesn't release accurate information on what they rank or why, for obvious reasons.

I would make it easier for the users to read, and use a dash or pipeline. Personally I don't think it matters which, I use pipeline as I think it looks neater. I wouldn't just list all your keywords one after the other with nothing between them though.

out of interest, is there anything in the google webmaster area basically saying that google will not disclose exactley what it ranks websites for? that would be good for my report - i've looked but can't find a source
