First step is try to submit it to as many as other web directories (good web directories) whether they are paid or free. Buy signature links as well as Avatar throughout various webmaster forums. There are several ways to promote your web directories so go with it step by step :)

Basic and first step is not to think about PR, PR comes naturally if you work hard on your directory.

Start creating a complete site for readers, add a lot of quality content.

Forget about link building on start, focus on traffic and content management,

You might also consider running a special here on DP (discounted submission prices for a limited time) to get revenue flowing. ...and for heaven's sake, always disable image validation for paid directories. :)

The wording in the submit section seems to be joined in a lot of cases but might be my browser or display

Best of luck moving forward with your site.

You can announce your directory (with or without discounts) in some of the webmaster forums. Also submit to popular directory lists. Submit your directory to good directories. And keep a tight control on the websites that you are approving.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to fill all your categories yourself by putting a little bit of effort. :)

Chris, I completely understand your concern's about image validation. But I feel having 4 digit image validation in form of numbers shouldn't cause much harm.

I have it enabled on bams and have a lot of manual spam reduced coz they are too lazy to even enter basic numbers.

I am infact thinking to upgrade my bidding dir in my signature and add number image validation soon.

What's your thought on simple n basic image validation. :)

I am very much against image validation, in any form. It's better to have some other solution for spam than to put up a roadblock for those who would send you money.

I wouldn’t consider running a directory without image verification and rarely do I get a complaint about it.

Try to keep those of us that are visually impaired in mind. Sometimes it can take many times to get it right, especially when they are case sensitive. Plus, it always slows the submission process, no matter how easy to read it is, making it harder and more time-intensive for people to send you money. Even much more so if I were going to submit many listings.

I tested quite a few image verification systems out around 5 or 6 years ago and found one that was reasonably user friendly and was not easily circumvented by automated submission systems. I get just a few complaints a year usually from somebody who needs glasses or is intoxicated.

Some are definitely better than others. I'm against them as a whole, but at least the ones you can usually get right on the first try are bearable when you only have one listing to submit. Submitting many listings can be quite a pain, though. It seems the biggest problem is that some characters look like others, like 9 g and q can all look similar with some image validations, for example. Anyway, if I get it wrong twice, I'll almost certainly move on...maybe come back...maybe not. :)

Many captcha modules now come with voice assisted support, refresh to a new image and also offer many styles to display the image, these improvements are probably put into play as for mentioned above and solve these issues.
