in a nut shell seo can be a profession if you have the nack , the no how, the swagger to indulge your self in this chocolaty mist of golden opportunity go for it, but I warn you competition is fearsome lol best of luck
I have been working as an SEM professional for a few years now and make a very good living. I believe that if you find the right kind of firm, such as an all inclusive interactive agency, you will be fine.
SEO is easy as pie once you have an army of high quality websites of authority at your disposal. Or know how to get high authority backlinks, such as being a DMOZ editor for example. To achieve all that, it is continious hard work for years, and only then can you charge people $500 an hour to have a chat with you.
I just came across this thread and found it very interesting topic to discuss... as i already discuss on this topic lots of time in DP... SEO and SEM are the emerging fields in Internet world, and future in SEO and SEM jobs in India are more secure and growth prospective jobs... no doubt it is a challenging job, but it makes your more active and updated (with all the trends going on in the internet or Search Engine) This time i want you (who so ever is searching for SEO jobs in India) all to give it a try: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=933613 Thanks.
You should start doing SEO on your own sites before working with clients or looking for a job in the industry.
work hard, learn as much as you can for all different aspects of internet marketing. SEO being one of them. Practice makes perfect..
I believe the same as many people that SEO is the great way to make money in the current path to future. Even it takes a lot of effort, but I still have faith in it. There are a lot of people who can meet a great success by doing SEO. Hope one day I can be the one too. Cheer!
I will say as the other member said SEO will remain as long as we have sites on Internet and internet is a huge source of Information which have made our life more easy and smooth so I dont think that in future any time will come when we will loose the Internet and Internet is only because of the sites are there. To improve the raking and position of the site people will take SEO help so the conclusion is one could take SEO as a profession but there should be another option also to keep your life secure
These days it's fairly easy to have a website (for business purposes or just for fun), but a good website = hard work. Content, links, meta tags and paid online promotion (if needed) - this is where good copywriting/SEO/SEM techniques make the difference. P.S. Aaron Wall has a great SEO Book for anyone interested in SEO & SEM.
If you ask me it's MUCH better as an SEO to work on your own sites, why bust your backside generating ROI for someone else when you push your own stuff? It's far less risk, stress etc and you are building a profitable income earning site that you actually own as an asset and can sell. You have full flexibility and control over the site and you don't have a client who says "We can't change xyz" which is currently ruining the optimization or says "We have to add xyz" that undoes weeks of optimization work. But if you are a poor SEO (about 90% of SEO's) then yes you will probably make more money out of customers then you would doing SEO on your own sites.
I agree with that, however, even huge names like Aaron Wall still offer SEO consulting services (for big companies, of course) AND make money off their sites. So if you offer SEO services it doesn't mean you're no good, just as having your own website doesn't make you a SEO expert. But if you can balance those two, learning from the "big guys"... well, that's another story.
If course it doesn't mean you are no good, Aaron is a household name in SEO and people pay big dollars for just an hours one on one with him so it's obviously quite profitable. That's not the case for most people, i managed to jump above Aaron on Google.com but nobody knows me so there's no way i could command remotely the same fee. Some of the best SEO's i have seen in the game don't even rank for any SEO terms, they are making insane money pushing their own sites. If you are truly skilled, why would you work for a set fee or even a percentage of the profits when you can take 100%, maintain complete control over the project and build an asset you own and can sell? Sure there's advantages to offering SEO services, but if you are good most people will generate more working for themselves.
If you are expert in analysis and if you are having passion about learn new things and love to do some research about new techniques than SEO and SEM is the right field for you. It give lots of opportunity as people are increasing their purchasing online as a result website who are selling their products online will definitely need to get more visitors. as a result SEO people will be in demand, But it will be more beneficial if you gain knowledge of SEO, PPC, affiliate marketing, Some scripting languages and good writing skills. SEO can be selected as a career..
It's a growing field but also the number of people offering SEO is growing so it is competitive. Like anything if you are good you can make a lot of money, but to get good you need a lot of hard work. I do it because I find it interesting. If you enjoy it you will get good and then do well. If you dont enjoy it find something else.
