I would like to do both. Hire someone for directory submissions and do forum posting yourself

I do both you can't really tell which one helps more

but yes the truth is that most directories become paid as soon as they get
the High PR but as long as you don't care about PR but the SERPs improvement
    then you will be fine

Well, it depends. Submitting to relevant directories is useful. Posting on relevant forums is useful.

from SEO point of view you most likely know that G no longer recommends directory submissions - hence SEO wise directories may lose or have lost any value. at least to me. directories are death. part of past - history of www.

the future is better and more unique content and top seo to get SE traffic.

    forum ...
DP forum brings so little traffic that a 2 or 3 blog articles per months bring more new readers than a forum with 2000+ posts.
a single properly promoted ( thru RSS feed ) interesting article may bring more visitors than average small talk forum posts.

if however you have your OWN forum and start to post answers BEFORE the questions arise, you may attract ppl searching for your answer and sometimes adding new questions / traffic to YOUR forum. keep in mind the additional security risk ANY forum always contains.

Its good to have links coming from both directories, forums and other avenues such as blogs, articles and press releases as it looks more natural than all your links coming from only one source.

As said, Google now does not recommend directory submissions but still I see it as an avenue worth exploring. My idea of online marketing is always driven by the fact that you have make yourself visible were your target audience is. So if you know that your target is likely to be looking in particular directories for the product and services you have to offer, then it would be worth getting listed there.

Forum cannot do much in terms of traffic but is a good marketing exercise. It helps you build brand recognition and that may not deliver prompt gratification but would surely help in the long run.

yes it worth only when you are getting back links from reputed directories. If directories are selected based on quality of that directory website than it will help.

Yes it is true that Google no more recommended directory submissions and some good directories has been nofollow. But you can use some good hight PR directories.

You can waste alot of time submitting to directories that just don't respond. I'd check high ranking directories that specialise in your region as they're usually higher ranking and you get a quick response.

If I have 1 hour a day to do linking, then it is a "DoFollow" fourm like DP. G is killing a linking concepts and Directories will start to have no value.

And to go to paid Directories to get traffic, Oh please... look at your analytics. Directories don't even show up.

Directories are to obtain a one way link to your site. They have no other SEO value.

It's SERPS alone that brings traffic
I am in absolutely NO paid directory
and in a very few free non-recip directories
yet even before being in any directory at all i had around 100+ verifiable top 3 SERPS on individual pages and plenty of traffic

all my success is based entirely on on page SEO plus serious and full RSS feed promotion
    all for free
    nothing more nothing less

in my opinion directories have been a way to artificially inflate link popularity just like other methods were used to bypass other G rules of quality. directories have been but a new / alternate method to the already obsolete link farming. most directories free at the beginning and paid when PR goes up are link farms with zero traffic value
traffic however is the ONLY factor that counts
i get #1 serps among dozens of millions competing pages merely based on a.m. professionally clean methods

may be age of site is a G factor far more important than mentioned ...
I have one site and never more
i was and am willing to go all the way
unlimited efforts until i achieve the goal and finish my job
as opposed to today's widespread easy and fast money making trend
which in turn is the basis of our all currently experiencing global financial crisis!

from what I have read forum posting is better than directory submission. Google tends to put a little more weight on forum posting as well.

The OP's question drove me to my Google Analytics to see which sent me more visitors — social bookmarking, directories, or forums? Here's our top result from each category, with unique visitors (UVs) over the past month:

    • 117 UVs from Squidoo = social bookmarking
    • 48 UVs from 2yi.net = directory
    • 19 UVs from Digital Point = forum

P.S. By comparison, the search engines sent me 46,504 unique visitors last month. So...priorities? :)

if you look at MY start page
then you see all 5 icons for my 5 RSS feeds plus my OPML feed
2 RSS feeds are hand made - 3 are auto created

i use my RSS feeds to include them in a purely promotion purpose blogger blog ( see right of my avatar ) and in any of the social sites such as

    Squidoo

    and similar
blogger and social sites often offer an application to insert ALL your RSS feeds - or friends feeds - and you can define how many items are shown,
hence besides any eventual direct traffic, the key purpose is to OFFER Google and other SE a hand to easier and faster find my newest pages promoted thru my RSS feeds

if you are new to RSS - may be my RSS howto may help you.

just out of curiosity - I checked my access_log for yahoo's rss views and yahoo shows of course ( like other SE as well ) for each feed data like

users 2105; views 66223 ( that is one of my main feeds )
these are typically data PER day

these data have been MUCH smaller years ago - I surely was among the first to implement RSS feeds because by the time I wanted to start I found no where a howto - hence I made my own rss howto after creation my feeds.

hence it may take years to get such or larger numbers
but its worth it !! life is LOOOONG
the older you get the more successful you get
and thus the better your life/revenue
    :)

    Jim4767
    my proportions are very similar
the reason why i do several is simple many times 100+ uv/d also gives a 1000 or more

biggest junk of traffic comes from G
    other smaller shares from
    RSS subscription
SSI - included RSS on other sites
    ask.com and other sites
    social sites, etc

hence the priority is clear - LOVE Google and treat G like you would treat a lover-girl :)
