    Hi all,

I have released the DMOZ alternative directory. This directory will provide an alternative to the DMOZ directory.

I would appreciate if you can take a look, play around etc. and provide your feedback / criticism / suggestions / comments about the site design, speed, contents, menu or whatever other aspects you can think of.

    Thanks a lot
    SS

Why do you think the name is bad? Because it is called DMOZ alternative directory? If so why? And what about the theme? Any details would be helpful.

You may be violating some copyright laws by using that name.
The design does not look professional, you should get a different
template and you should get a professional logo.

You mean the name 'DMOZ' in the 'DMOZ alternative directory' is a violation? If so can you please provide me the link or details of the material or reference document that says so? I have seen other directories out there using that name.

I have made sure that I have properly acknowledged DMOZ by providing their link at the bottom of the page. I have gone through their web site and this is the terms of their licence agreement (if you try to use their directory structure). So I am not sure if there is a copyright violation there. But it would be helpful to get some more details if otherwise.

May be using the name DMOZ in the directory is more of a -ve than a +ve. Don't know.

The design and layout actually look ok something which you would expect from a directory. Well, I also took some time to navigate around and I don't see any issue or error. Your biggest obstacle is to actually promote it.

Thanks for looking into the site and providing your feedback. Yeah, I agree promoting the site would be the biggest obstacle.

It hurts when a site has too much (or not enough) "white space" - you should fill in the sidebars as soon as you can.

yeah, I agree, you're wasting too much space mainly on the homepage. I like the dotted borders when you hover over a category. I submitted my site. Thanks for the free link. Get a thankyou page. Maybe make people verify email.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Good idea about the whitespace. But can you please elaborate on why whitespace is bad design? I thought I will leave some white space for future real estate space on the site (to add permium categories) etc.

Hey, are you Steve BTW, who submitted your site? Thanks. The site has been listed (you might also have gotten my message sent through your site http://www.webdesignbysteve.com. Looking for more of your feedback. I shall also help with your site if any needed. Thanks.

How it can be dmoz's alternative?...Dmoz is a big database. Submitting site to dmoz and at your website will have same effect? Never !

That is why it is an DMOZ alternative...but just for the heck of it I have changed it to DmozAlt.Com and not DMOZ alternative. That should keep it going...

Thanks. I admit, choosing impressive color is not my forte. So what color combination do you suggest? Any good pointers would be appreciated.

look on my site in signature.
not too bright, but quite appealing.
the more subtle and less in your face, the better

    Few Observations:
    Theme: Not very much attractive
Domain: Try to make your own identity rather then use of DMOZ
Promotion: Heavy need of promotion of this site through proper seo services

Theme: Agree - again the theme design isn't my forte - are there any sites whre good theme templates are available for free?

Domain: I agree - may be I should use another domain name

Promotion: Which site doesn't need (heavy) promotion (except for the Googles)? That is going to be the toughest thing to accomplish.
