Filling ALT image tag with keywords or description meta?

    I was wondering if anybody had the chance to prove if linking an image to the page where it's place and filling the alt tag with the same page keywords has any positive effects?

    thanks

    I have not done any actual testing for this scenario. I have always read that the image alt tag acts as the link anchor text to the search engine spiders. So it would be a good idea to put your keyword(s) in the link anchor text. Just don't keyword stuff by putting in too many keywords.

    i've checked my back links on backlinkwatch.com and it does show when images are used as links and what ALT text is used for the anchor text. so i believe it does work.

    Yes, it has positive effects but I don't think the ALT text will make any difference.
    It would be the same effect as linking an image to some page. 1 more link for you with some value.

    In all SEO documents so far, they say yes. If you look at Google's recomendations, they ask for it.

    I use the following format and get excellent results:

    <a href="http://www.catanich.com/" title="Internet Marketing Services Dallas Search Engine Optimization Company">

    <img id="logo" src="images/internet-marketing-company-cim.gif" alt="Internet Marketing Services Dallas Search Engine Optimization Company" border="0">

    </a>

    If I remove the code, the page will drop in the SERPS.

    This link will not show up in WMT and should not pass Page Rank (but...?)

    If this link would go to an outside site, I will add the NoFollow attribute to it just to make sure.

    The image text should be relevant to the image means the relevant text would be the primary keyword.

    Alt tags are also part of an off page optimization techniques, so adding some keywords would really help your site in increasing keyword rankings, though its effects are only minimal, so better not to overstuff your keywords on them. Just put some only keywords and make it sure that they best described the image.

    Image alt tags should always be used. Not only can they help with SEO, they are required if you want your site to validate valid XHTML. I wouldn't recommend "Stuffing" the alt tag - use it properly and you will benefit.
