There are some pretty savvy guys/gals among those directory owners that you mentioned (plus others, too). My best guess is that they're applying every ounce of their business sense to evaluating current trends. Many, perhaps most, of them will make the changes necessary to keep pace with the evolving internet landscape. Even to the point in some cases of moving on from directories — if they see the signs indicating that strategy — to the next area of successful emphasis, whatever that may be.

A good businessman/woman adapts as conditions change.

I know there are some good directory owners here just Im sure they are just getting on with the day to day work of running a directory.

Jim is correct also and thats how things go.
Always important to adapt to change and try to look ahead.

Unfortunately as for the older members well jeff and mystikemedia decided to bail right in the midst of a hard time for directories (which will always be remembered)
Britishguy - no loss..you remember him trying to say he had shareholders? :p
popotalk - less said the better

This is a better place with the majority of people here now imo

oh yea and have some red rep for that

Perhaps they are "top" because they don't spend time on Internet forums. They all have better things to do.

I know Chris, Pete, Jeff all run other business ventures. Popo is still around with other niche web projects as I still speak to him.

An0n is still green as far as I know ;)

Mikey is probably right on the mark. Participating on dp is not the signature of success in the directory biz as far as I can tell. Sure it is a nice place to meet some great people and participate in discussions to gain insight and ideas from others.

But here is the benchmark... Do you see the owners of business.com, dir.yahoo, dmoz, joeant, botw hanging out here trying to promote their directories? These benchmark directories spend their time actually running their businesses and focusing on growing them.

Maybe a more controversial way to look at this and I am not saying those directories you mention are or are not great. Here is a thought though. Maybe the people participating here on dp are missing those directory owners more than those directory owners are missing dp...

It is just something I have thought about and I will leave it at that to give you something to think about.
