Wikipedia runs on MediaWiki. It's a piece of server-side software, in PHP, that originates from the Wikipedia project itself.

They "make their money" through donations, not ads (there are no ads on the site). They're a non-profit organization.

Ah, and if you want to make such a site, there are many other similar software packages. They're called wikis. A good list can be found at http://www.wikimatrix.org/ .

Has fsav said above, Wikipedia runs on MediaWiki software.

But, if you want, you install MediaWiki on your computer! Good for learning purposes.

    Go here: http://bitnami.org/stacks
    and download the MediaWiki stack.

Yeah people actually donate :p It's kind of a huge humanity-changing project.

As for MediaWiki, Google for "MediaWiki" and you'll find the info you need. Easily handled I can't say, it depends on your experience and I've never installed it myself.

I think they translated the pages by asking people to help. Google was doing that at one point too, I actually translated some stuff for google into Bulgaria. I did not get paid for any of it...

I think all Work in Wikipedia including translation is voluntary work ,no one is getting paid for it, but the project it self is based on sharing knowledge :)

There are a few people who get paid to edit Wikipedia. Many corporations and government organizations now have their public relations departments update it, and politicians and celebrities are notorious for getting their staffers to "cleanup" pages about them.
