Is it true that you can't use Adsense units in a site with 'adsense' word in its URL?

I read it in a blog of a self-calling Adsense Consultant, but I've seen various sites in the net that break this 'rule'...

Adsense will automatically remove your ad if it contains trademarked words in it. However, you can ask for an exclusion in case your website uses the trademark in an appropriate way. Adsense guides and tools are allowed to use "adsense" in their ads.

Can't really give you an answer to rely on, but I know this related story:
Someone I know had AdSense ads on a site containing "adwords" (not adsense) in the URL (not in the domain name though). The account got banned, and he never found out why since Google most likely won't ever tell you.
    Good luck with your project!

You are talking about Google Adwords, not Google Adsense...

in order to use any of google's brand feature, you need advanced permission from google. but in the case of domain name, here is what google says:

Don’t register Google trademarks as second-level domain names
    >> which means you cannot register adsense.org or adsense.info or something

Don’t use Google trademarks in a way that suggests a common, descriptive, or generic meaning
    >> which means you cannot register adsense101.com or some other domain adding generic word along with adsense

So, if I've understood correctly, shouldn't be there any problem with an URL like w w w.mydomain.com/tips-on-adsense.htm?

    i guess not..
It will be a violation of TOS if you use adsense on a domain the contains the word "adsense" anywhere in it.

This should be fine but I think using any of Google's trademarked name like orkut, youtube, adsense, adwords etc as a second level name could create problems. Few days back I saw someone who was warned for using orkut... in the domain name.

as long as the brand name is not in the second level domain name. you can use brand name as a subdomain or folder/file name without any problem.

the reason for not allowing brand name on the second level domain is to eliminate confusion. not only adsense will not allow it as a policy, it is also against UDRP (uniform domain name dispute resolution policy) rule. brand owner or patent holder can take your domain name away from you if you have brand name used on a second level domain just by filing a complaint with WIPO (world intellectual property organization).
