every day i have at least 6 or 7 new user sign ups on my blog that are spam.

Why do they do that? what advantages does it have to the spammers? And how can I prevent that?

    Thanks

I am also stumped at why they do it, I have never had a spammer sign up and then post or comment using that username.

I'm not sure what can be done to stop them. I think you can set it so that you approve/disapprove sign-ups, of course if you turn off sign-ups this will stop them but will also stop legitimate people from signing up.

I'm sure someone more experienced will come along and offer some amazing plugin that can help us. :)

Depending on how your blog is set up, signed up 'members' of the site may get more privileges -- comments not held for moderation, allowed "do follow" links, etc. Even if that's not actually the case for the way you've configured your blog, spammers will get their bots to sign up anyway, as it's easier than checking.

Since signing up gives them access to the admin page, perhaps they are looking for vulnerabilities.

The last wordpress had a hack option but they fixed that very fast. So now they can not do anything. I guess they try to see if you have the right version or not. I have 3 a day as well.

Well they are pretty cute lol you can spam them since they are subscribers :) But i guess they will put your email in a spam register.

I too had problems like that. Then I disabled user signups. And for comments, akismet is really useful and i see no spam nowadays

This happened to me before. What you can do is move the file of the register.php to a different location. You can also disable registrations through your dashboard settings.

Unless there's a real reason to open up registrations then turn it off. Or manually register those who need to register yourself.

I turned it off ages ago to avoid problems and didn't have fake logins again. Now SMF, that's a whole other ball game.
