HTTP error: 404 not found and Partial Indexing

Discussion in 'Google Sitemaps' started by guybrush, May 20, 2006.

Please check out the attached image which shows 404 error for pages which I removed back in January and G sitemap has been updated many times since then. Interesting to note are the "Last Calculated" dates for these pages which are quite recent. Why is google still looking for pages which have not existed in the sitemap since january?

Besides the above, I am also receiving this:
"Some of your pages are partially indexed."
    Google's

Can anybody suggest what can be done to resolve these issues?

You could add these files to your robots.txt file as

    Disallow: -glossary-*

and Google will stop searching. I've had this issue before after Google picked up on websites I was creating in subfolders of my main site.

The problem may be that other sites are still linking to those urls giving 404s... You could consider making a redirect.

Just keep in mind that 404 redirects are not allowed.
    Try to use 301 redirect.
    Good luck.

Yep it doesn't matter if those links are from other sites or a deep dark corner of the goog index. Go ahead and use the links in the sitemap error list and 301 those bad boys.

Take a look at your site logs as well, you should be able to tell if they came from googlebot or another site. If they came from a bot you may find more than one bot trying those links so 301 them and you'll be in good shape.

For some odd reason Google has lately just been showing old pages in their index. I have several pages that haven't been used for years and haven't been in the index as far as I know up until now.
This is really weird and it seems like they use an old backup or reverted the code and is looking at old cached pages..... Now sure I like it. If I want to see my old pages I can go to WayBackMachine instead :(

Yep I've seen some "very" old links show up in the past few weeks. I didn't even bother redirecting some of these.

That's the ticket. It may take a while for the error page list to shrink but that should do it. Be sure to resub the sitemap as well.

The sitemap error page and you logs together should show you all broken incoming links (as well as a ton of other stuff). Use them together to get the big picture.
