Treat custom fields as "extra fields" that will store additional information for a particular article. This can be an image thumbnail link (commonly used) or any other information that is not available to enter in the standard article form.
I think you should use wordpress for making this type of website and the theme which you should use is mimbo magazine. I think this could be a perfect combination.

I am using wordpress as a content site for http://www.mbapursuit.com and http://www.reviewmirchi.com. WP as a content site works perfectly for upto 2000 pages approx, after that the management becomes tough
I made a few sites similar to that one on WP platform. Brian Garner has few themes that can be changed to become almost like that one!
it's possible. the nytimes uses wordpress and it's an info site. but i think a cms would be better suited.
