Smiling Streetkids - assistance needed for awareness raising campaign

I have just uploaded this gallery of pictures of streetkids and the places they sleep. Then emailed everyone in my lists (couple of thousand)...

My goal is to have the gallery seen by as many people as possible - raising awareness and quite possibly attracting donations.

Does anyone have some tips for me on viral marketing or something else you believe may be useful in this case to increase the exposure of the gallery?

although it's a small place to start, perhaps email it to people you know and ask them to forward it to people they know..?

Also, put the donation and contact information at the bottom of each page. Right now the user has to click through a ton of photos before they get to the info page right at the end. A lot of people might never finish up by then.

Also, some info on what you do with the kids, how you help them etc. People would probably like to see where the money is going. And any links to orghanizations you've worked with - for a random surfer coming in, they don't know if you're a legit organization or not.

Thank you - excellent points. I have implemented the changes you suggested.

Is anyone using a 54k dial-up connection - the pictures are mostly under 20k, but how slow was it between photos i.e. 'fine,' 'too slow,' etc.

That was my first step - I have a subscriber base of 2,500.

I guess I'm asking if anyone knows of online publications which may help promote the gallery or

a suitable ezine / mailing list that may promote the gallery as it is interesting / unique content.

Any other distribution ideas / specific contacts would be helpful.

when you email them, you may want to also ask them to stick it in their blogs if they have them, and hopefully other bloggers may pick up on it

    That's a great idea.

A while ago I sent in a few homeless people's stories to 3 'general' blogs in the hope of having them promoted but didn't get anywhere.

But your suggestion has prompted me to consider more closely how to engage their support.

My alexa ranking went from 150,000+ to 39,000 after the first day, my webstats are el-cheepo and delayed by a few days so nothing to report on how successful emailing it was.

If I can get enough people to view the gallery I know there are a few newspapers here that will pick up on it from that angel "x number of people were exposed to pictures of streetkids and the places they seek shelter in a bid to raise awareness... etc" which will bring even greater awareness and some more visitors to the gallery.

    Thanks for your suggestion.

I'd suggest contacting google about adding it to their PSAs. Never know what could happen there.

Well, who knows if it will work, but I can't see them turning down a public service- it wouldn't be right.

You'll probably need to prove that you aren't just taking the loot and running into the outback with it though.

Great - thanks for that. I'll see if they will help out.

BTW - one of the homeless people in the states who has a blog linked to our site - thanks that was a good tip.

No I had not. I was hoping to get a high number of pageviews before taking it to the media.

The traffic is more than we have ever had x10 but still looking for a good stat.

People are still forwarding the url: www.homeless.org.au/streetkids/ on to their friends, into the second week.
