In Google's eyes, there is only one thing worse that buying links and that is selling them.

Now the links you sold are of no value. Does the person you sold the links to get a refund?

wtf? How does chosing what link you put on your site not belong to you? How brainwashed by G are you? Even Matt Cutts says he is not trying to tell webmasters what to do with thier site, just that they do what will keep thier index clean. Sorry for the tone of the rant mate, but your just so far off the mark on that one.

About 2 years ago I did sell some links. That site has since been abandoned and I started studying SEO so it would never happen again.

Lesson learned . . . for me it was a very expensive lesson.

What's the difference between selling links and selling banner ads? No really? If a site sells links but hides them as banner ads with normal html links, do you think google can really have a problem with this?

Can my PR ever recover? I like this site, and I don't want to abandon it.

It could be one of the reasons especially it was like almost 2 days down. Anyway, I think the more probable reason should be your link sales activity because each one way link that you place there leaks out PR and also google is smart enough to detect paid links in the first place.
