How do I create a graphic for an URL?

    I would like to add a graphic to the url so that when anyone clicks on the site the image shows up in the browser, for example if you go onto Paypal you see a "P" to the left in Firefox browser - how do I do that?

    I would be using either a gif or jpg of a product.

    Bleedin' hell. There has to be a sticky for this, it is asked just too much. You need to convert your image into a tiny little icon file. Do that here.

    Save that file as "favicon.ico" and upload that to the root of your website.

    If you want to call it something else, or the automatic way doesn't work throw this in the head section of your HTML:

    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
    Code (markup):

    What he said, but without the goofy Down Under style of quotes. "" is different than ” : )

    Thanks for the info, however, I have created the icon as you described fantastic (thanks) uploaded it to root directory, and when I load page in browser, it still doesn't show. Added the code and edited the speach marks, still doesn't show.

    Please be gentle - I am a virgin coder...

    Try it in a different browser or on a different computer and see if it shows up. Sometimes the default favicon is cached and the new one refuses to show up for a while.

    I don't think you need the type="image/x-icon"

    I use this on most of my sites, without any probs:
    Or try using the full url in your href e.g blabla.com/favicon.ico - especially if you're using some kind of CMS or blog software.
    Also, as windrider said - clear your cache. Favicons are notorious for caching issues, especially in crappy browsers like IE. I don't think IE6 displays them anyway.

    @ geester1 - are you testing this in a few browsers?

    They are called favicons. You can Google that and you will find free favicon generator or you can make them yourself and also their site will include a tutorial on how to install them.

    Lemee guess, you had to clear your cache to get it to show?

    Soooo many times I have added a favicon and FF just doesn't want to show it without my clearing the cache. Manually.
