Sound Problem

I re-installed Windows XP yesterday and now my computer doesn't play any sound at all.

I've no idea what is wrong with it, but was hoping someone might be able to help me out?

I've checked the obvious things, so before anyone says is the volume muted, have you got the correct wires plugged in, is the sound turned up etc i've done all that and nothing.

Have you installed the drivers for your audio card/integrated sound?

You need to work out what sound card you have, or what integrated audio you have on your mobo. If you have no idea what hardware is in your computer, then you can poke around in: Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager

If you get really desperate, dig out the receipt or specs for your PC. Your audio hardware should be listed on it somewhere.

Once you find out what sound card you have (or integrated mobo sound), you'll easily be able to get the driver by Googling it.

    :)

You can also try Windows key + R (run), then type "dxdiag" without the commas, and check out the "Sound" tabs.

Find the make/model of your sound card to find it's drivers.

Crap...like that is very good solution to OP's problem.

Found this from the spec off the box the computer came in:

    Audio output

    Type: Sound card - integrated

Sound Output Mode: 7.1 channel surround

I looked in the Device Manager but it just said Audio Codec, Legacy Audio Codec.

If you've got integrated audio, then all you need to know is what motherboard you've got, and then get the drivers for that.

If you don't know what board you've got, there's a crap load of freeware system analyzers that will tell you what it is.
