Is there anyway of holding a domain name or being first in line for when it becomes available?

A client competitor has gone bankrupt and they would like to buy their domain as soon as it becomes available.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Well... if the domain is expiring soon then you might need to backorder the domain with multiple domain back ordering services such as poll etc.. if it has a long time till expire you might need to contact the domain owner as a third party( do not mention your client business etc..) and offer them something small for the name.
"This does not guarantee that they will give you the name though"

    Good luck

    try backordering using pool, snapnames,,,
depending on where it is registered then the best place to backorder does vary, eg: if it is godaddy then the name goes to tdnam expired auctions few days before its expirery date.
let me know where it is registered so i might be able to help you better :)

    Hi

The domain is registered with NETWORK SOLUTIONS.

There is another 8 years left on the domain (i guess they werent expecting to go bankrupt!).

8 years is a long time, business model could change during this 8 years. I suggest to try to contact the registrant and act as a student or something that you like this domain for non commercial use, this way they won't ask you huge pricing. if not you might need to check for the name popping out in some domain auctions since the company is no longer in use creditors might want to gain any money from the domain if they can.
