    Wrong, You can have animated .ico files as well - check a working animated favicon here

    Mr Goldberg - First verify if a static favicon works for you.
    Here are some scenarios that prevent favicon from showing up
    a. Link / path ref is incorrect
    b. Cache needs to be cleared (close browser, delete all temp files)
    c. Server caches file (especially images, and generally clears it after an hour)

    To resolve a - Path issue - type the path/URL to favicon in browser and check if your browser displays you favicon, if it does then its a caching issue - clear cache and it should work.

    Cheers

    Yes bro,i have done everything correct...

    and when i check the favicon and the animated image also,they both look good,but just on my main site,it doesnt work..

    I have done everything correctly...

    The static favicon works great,but not the animated one....

    I generated the favicon from here and applied as it said me...
    http://www.animatedfavicon.com/

    How to use the Animated FavIcon:

    If you would like to display the animated favicon, upload animated_favicon.gif also

    and insert the following HTML tags.

    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" >
    <link rel="icon" href="animated_favicon.gif" type="image/gif" >
    Code (markup):

    The suggestion is wrong,
    a. you can't have two tags for favicon (you can have as many ... infact but only one would get processed..so delete second tag and add type="image/x-icon")
    b. You don't need to specify image/gif for animated favicon

    Here is what works for one of our customers on emediclaim.com
    <link href="/templates/rhuk_milkyway/favicon.ico" rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" />

    The initial image gets created as GIF, rename it as .ICO (change the extension) and you are set to go ...

    Give link to your site / and let me know if I could help to make it work as a paid activity.

    Cheers

    No faviocon even showing in IE, It's not animated in Opera or Safari...

    Son of a gun, it is present and animated in firefox. Was not aware gecko supported such a thing, too bad it appears to be browser specific AND incorrectly feeding the file type.

    Since .gif is NOT a .ico file in format (which is a windows standard container just like .cur or .bmp) - the two filetypes aren't even compatable, likely why it doesn't work at all in IE as it's probably seeing .ico, then throwing an error when the file in question is NOT - it shouldn't work anywhere at all, I suspect that the different image decoders are varying degrees of 'smart' so far as double checking file format.

    Just renaming a .gif to .ico is completely wrong and shouldn't work at all in any browser.

    deathshadow, once upon a time I would have agreed with you without hesitation, but anymore, I see animated icons all the time. Every icon in Mac OSX is animated, and it appears that Vista can support animated icons as well, so there is obviously a change in what an icon is capable of doing. Now, just renaming a .gif to .ico and having it work still screams WRONG to me too.

    That's really the crux of my problem with it. Just renaming the file .ico should NOT even be allowed to work.

    Oddly, .ani files (animated cursors) are theoretically an animated version of .cur, which is the exact same format with a different key string in the header as .ico - I'd think those would be a better choice if such a thing were to be implemented.

    But it does work!!! I had not checked it in IE until it was pointed out here, so yes, the animated favicon works in FF.
    I created it on the web, downloaded it as .gif, renamed as suggested by website, and favicon.ico does work as i would expect it to be (though only in FF :( -- need to fix this for all versions)

    Cheers
