Portfolio Ideas, etc

    Hey People!

Over the past few months I've just been mucking around with several different designs and website styles on my website Cr.eate.in. However now I am fairly sure that I want it to be a portfolio website.

right now I have a quick design I've made and put up there with some basic coding knowledge (I'm not very good at coding =S).

So why am I posting this? I just would like someone to help bounce ideas off as to what would work, what would be impressive to potential employers etc. Also possibly be able to help code? Currently I can't really pay for this, it would be good though to even just have someone to bounce ideas off or they provide me with some ideas. If you want to that'd be great :)

    Thanks for reading this post,

    Cheers,
    Mattnham

Portfolios have usually a more 'professionalized' look to them. Try using web 2.0 features on your design, and make it colorful, but have the colors match. Coding is quite a difficult thing to learn, but if you're more of just a designer, and don't plan on trying to impress anyone with your coding skill, download a free template and edit the graphics and images to make it look like you made it. Technically it's not stealing, but some may consider it to be. I don't think it hurts anything though. Give it a try. :p

Thanks for your reply. Right now I'm working on a simplistic retro design. All the other portfolios seemed to have a black background so I have too. However, I wanted it to show colour, a spectrum. thats where the retroness comes in. It's still in concept atm, just trying different things!

    Cheers,
    Matt.!

Yeah, I pretty much learnt coding by looking at other templates and google searches (oh, and http://www.w3schools.com/ ) :)

What everyone refers to as "Web 2.0" design is dieing a death btw. Obviously clients may still request it, but portfolio designs should be all about creativity, try doing something without shiny gradients and rounded corners.

If you want some inspiration, try http://bestwebgallery.com/ and http://www.webcreme.com/

I wouldn't slave over your portfolio because you'll be at a much higher standard in 4 months and will want to redesign it, I changed my portfolio 3 times in one year!

    Yea thanks,

My portfolio site has gone through such tremendous changes. First it was a basic colour site in html, then it turned into a WP portfolio, then a WP blog, then back to WP portfolio, and then it is where i've left it now. I shall put up some screenshots of my 'concept' later. It would be great if I could get some feedback as to whether it looks good, and any improvements!

    Thanks for your help !

    Cheers,
    Matt.

    Update:

So here is an update of the site... This is the 'concept' I have created. I aimed for a dark portfolio site with a bit of colour. The scribles you see now behind the links will be invisible until hovered upon.

I'm not sure how close I am to achieving a good portfolio design. I think with this style I'm either close or way off track? Any advice or direction with it would be great. (You can't really see it, but there are coloured lines at the top or bottom). If anyone could assist me in ideas and other stuff that would be great [to talk on msn]!

    Thanks again,
    Matt.
